How is the deluxe edition of What's Going On? I've really never bought the What's Going On album because I just thought it was "an overrated pop classic" just like The Beatles' Sgt Pepper, The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, or even Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life. I keep hearing tracks from the album like Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology), the title track, What's Going On, and Inner City Blues. Now, I finally realize how amazing the album really is and why it's considered to be not only Marvin's magnum opus and one of Motown's biggest hits, but also it's one of the greatest albums in any genre. I came across this 2-disc deluxe edition and I'm wondering if I should buy it or buy the single album that Universal reissued in 2003? I'm looking at the deluxe edition track listing and it looks like there's some interesting stuff on it. Check me out and add me on:

Yes it's great because you get to hear the Berry Gordy Detroit Mix version of the album.
And it's not overrated at all. It's a masterpiece.

Overpriced, like everything else in the Deluxe Edition series. That album, like most reissues, has repaid it's original cost to the record label many times over. If they are going to endlessly reissue it couldn't they at least give us a break on the price?

The live concert on the 2'nd cd is a disapointment tho'
cuz the band seems totally unrehearsed & unfocused. Marvin even has 2 stop the band & start from the beginning. It sounds much better tho' when they perform "Save the children" at the Motown charity show but I guess they were more rehearsed then. /peace Manki

did you just use "an overrated pop classic" and "Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life" in the same sentence?
anyway, I enjoyed the deluxe ed of "I Want You" more than "What's Goin On". I say definitely get the re-issue of "What's Goin On", the Deluxe Ed is good, but I really couldn't get into the live portion too much. [Edited 3/19/05 16:31pm]

The live concert isn't that memorable, but for the rest of the material, GET THE DELUXE EDITION if you have any shred of dignity. And it's never been a "pop" album.
By all means, GET IT. James Jamerson will reward you. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
