Most of Phyllis Hyman's songs were really depressing. The ones I think about are "Living All Alone" and "I Don't Want to Lose You." You hear about her suicide and wonder whether her music was a cry for help.

Also, if you listen to the first few songs of Toni Braxton's first album, you'd think she was another Phyllis Hyman in training.

Here's her first big song:

"Since you been gone
I been hangin’ around here lately
With my mind messed up
Jumped in my car tried to clear my mind
Didn’t help me
I guess I’m all messed up now baby
Soon as I jumped into my ride
Those memories start to play
A song comes on the radio
And there u are baby once again

It’s just another sad love song
Rackin’ my brain like crazy
Guess I’m all torn up
Be it fast or slow
It doesn’t let go
Or shake me
And it’s all because of you"

And her second:

"If I never feel you in my arms again
If I never feel your tender kiss again
If I never hear I love you now and then
Will I never make love to you once again
Please understand if love ends
Then I promise you, I promise you
That, that I shall never breathe again
Breathe again
Breathe again
That I shall never breathe again
Breathe again"

And her follow up:

"Seven whole days
And not a word from you
Seven whole nights
I’m just about thru
I can’t take it, won’t take it
Can’t take it no more
I had about enough of you

I’d rather be on my own
Yes on my own"

Actually, if you have the "Boomerang" Ssoundtrack, this is one of her first singles:

"Should I even listen
Should I even try
Will I just be hearing the same old lines
Baby
See it doesn’t matter
What you say this time
Cause our whole relationship
Is built on one lie
You say things aren’t the way they seem
But still you can’t come straight with me

How can you think that you’re in love
When you don’t know the meaning of

Love shoulda brought you,
Brought you,
Home last night
You shoulda been with me
Shoulda been right by my side
Baby
If you cared anything for me
Then love woulda brought you
To me last night"

And who could forget this gem from her second album:

"I heard he sang a lullaby
I heard he sang it from his heart
When I found out thought I would die
Because that lullaby was mine
I heard he sealed it with a kiss
He gently kissed her cherry lips
I found that so hard to believe
Because his kiss belonged to me

How could an angel break my heart
Why didn’t he catch my falling star
I wish I didn’t wish so hard
Maybe I wished our love apart
How could an angel break my heart"

1000 Oceans by Tori Amos makes me feel a bit blue.

Musicology does too. But for a very different reason.

But in a strange way this song gives a lot of positive power too.
This song is so special.

I really don't mean to be an asshole either, but I think you're referring to After Hours - if you close your eyes is the first line of that song.

I really should look this up before posting - I haven't listened to that record in many years. This was the last song on the 3rd album, if I remember correctly.

Actually, the line is "If you close the door, the night could last forever"
And that song is SO not depressing. That's been like my theme song for the last 10 years.

But I'm unsure of a Velvet Underground song titled If you close your eyes... confused

The one I'm listening to right now.....

THAT JOKE ISN'T FUNNY ANYMORE

The Smiths

Park the car at the side of the road
You should know
Time's tide will smother you
And I will too
When you laugh about people who feel so
Very lonely
Their only desire is to die
Well, I'm afraid
It doesn't make me smile
I wish I could laugh

But that joke isn't funny anymore
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
It's too close to home
And it's too near the bone
More than you'll ever know ...

Kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down
You kick them when they fall down
Kick them when they fall down

It was dark as I drove the point home
And on cold leather seats
Well, it suddenly struck me
I just might die with a smile on my
Face after all

I've seen this happen in other people's lives
And now it's happening in mine

I've seen this happen in other people's lives
And now it's happening in mine.....I've seen this happen in other people's lives
And now it's happening in mine....

I've seen this happen in other people's lives
And now it's happening in mine
Oh ...

I've seen this happen in other people's
Lives
Oh ...
And now it's happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine

I've seen this happen in other people's lives
Oh ...
And now, now, now it's happening in mine
(I've seen this happen)
Happening in mine
Oh... now, now

I've seen this happen in other people's lives
Oh ...
And now it's happening in mine
(Happen)
Happening in mine
Oh ...
Happening in mine
Happening in mine
Happening in mine

I've seen this happen in other people's lives
Oh ...
And now, now, now it's happening in mine
Happening in mine
Mine, mine
Happening in mine....

This is an incredible song ~ takes me more deeply introspective than almost anything.
Have you heard Bjork's version of Gloomy Sunday? The sadness she conveys in this is almost more than I can bear.

What, the GEICO commercial? That's hilarious.

Gray by Ani Difranco would be amongst the most depressing songs. Then you could take your pick from almost any Pink Floyd, Sade, or Radiohead album.

Yeah, I messed up the title. Maybe depressing isn't the right word, but it sure seems sad to me. Everytime I hear it I get a little down. But in a good way. I think maybe Lou should have written more songs for Mo. It might have been neat to hear her sing one per album.

I have a hard time considering U2 songs depressing; they always end up being uplifting. "With or Without You", "So Cruel", "Please", and "Love is Blindness" however, I would consider depressing.
