A strange thing happened on my way to... ...the orifice this morning.
Whipped the dial over to, what I had known to be, Arrow 93.1 FM "The Best Classic Rock" to get a quick fix. Hysteria by Def Leppard was playing. Makes sense Then an odd thing occurred. The next song played was September by EW&F. Huh? This was followed by Better Man by Pearl Jam and The Logical Song by Supertramp. Whahoppen? The station ID let the cat out of the bag - 93.1 Jack FM From the website... ...We'll see if what "they want" is what I want. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Well, 93.1 is no longer a Classic Rock format station based on this morning's experience. Guess i'll have to reprogram my radio to include KLOS now to get my Classic Rock on. I'll just have to make sure it's after those clowns Mark and Brian. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. A very timely post, tA. Today's Wall Street Journal has front page story on this new "Jack" format (pun not intended). The article posited that this format, which is really a throw back to the AM days, is being developed in response to the increased popularity of the iPod, digital radio and listener's general disgust with the state of today's radio programming. One memorable quote from a Jack station program director: "If a listener hears MC Hammer fade into The Steve Miller Band, I have done my job." That is such a strange coincidence because the exact same thing happened down here in December. We had a station called ARROW 94 (the same name as the one in your area) that played classic rock from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. This station also bragged on the fact that it was one of the last stations in town that was live.
In December, it took on a new format and changed it's name to JACK FM (the same name as the one in your area). Under the new format, the station's motto is "we play what we want", which is basically any and everything from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. I've heard them play anything ranging from The Doobie Brothers, Edgar Winter, Boston, Styx, Cyndi Lauper, KC & The Sunshine Band, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Michael Jackson, The Cars, Culture Club, C & C Music Factory, Nirvana, Tone Loc, Third Eye Blind, etc. It's a strange combination. It might be cool if they played particular styles of music in three or four hour blocks but I don't like all these different styles thrown together. I'm constantly flipping the channel when a style comes on that I don't like. Now I'm starting to wonder if this is a satellite broadcast. [Edited 3/19/05 9:13am] Andy is a four letter word.

I had to make a quick run so while out I decided to see what Jack (my former Classic Rock station) was puttin' down.
Here's the list: Hold On Tight - ELO (I wonder if that Julie Delpy woman has heard the 3rd verse of this tune) The One I Love - R.E.M. Foolish Heart - Steve Perry Bang the Drum All Day - Todd Rundgren No Rain - Blind Melon Heartache Tonight - The Eagles Sister Christian - Night Ranger What I Like About You - The Romantics Pick Up The Pieces - AWB Since they don't announce what they play, it's obvious they're locked into what they've determined as "familiar" material. I was only tempted to change the station when No Rain came on and actually started laughing when I heard the intro to Sister Christian. They do have some funny little drop-ins here and there from this slightly slacker, slightly surfer sounding cat. "If you want to know about the weather, look out the window." "Tell us what you think, just don't tell us what to play." tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Jack is a Canadian format as far as I know. Did really well in British Columbia, and migrated to Calgary, Alberta last year and took over the radio market. Edmonton, Alberta has one called "Joe".
It's basically songs straight out of a Billboard Charts history book... if the single peaked in the top 40 from the 1970's onward, they'll play it. But that's why they don't take requests, either. Their format is all research. So don't be fooled into thinking you're gonna hear them bust out some wild album track. These songs would all hypothetically appear on each artist's "greatest hits".
