GREATEST SONG EVER....GOD ONLY KNOWS???

greatest song ever ....if i was pushed it would have to be the wonderful "god only knows" by the beach boys...every time i hear this song it sounds special and sends a shiver right down my backbone. from the heavenly melody line to the wonderful arrangment, everything about this song is as near perfect as it can get. what a genius that 22 year old brian wilson was before he lost his mind.....so what would yours be?

Probably.....

Imagine - John Lennon - simple, but straight to the point

OR

The times they are a-changin - Bob Dylan - very truthful

OR

What's goin on - Marvin Gaye - a true sign of the times.

Sorry, but I can't pick just one.

I'm with you on your description of this song. It's impossible to say if it or any other song is the greatest song ever. It depends on personal taste. What may be the greatest to u may be a pile of stank to someone else. But yeah, I've always dug "God Only Knows". Brian Wilson is no joke. Sir Paul said it was his favorite songs. And that's coming from someone who knows a thing or two about writing great ballads.

Many people here will disagree, and I'm sure many will post that The Beach Boys suck, but I do love them. There was a similar thread a while back about Good Vibrations which got that response. I actually just put God Only Knows on my iPod last night. It's one of their best and always makes me tear up. Someday I'm gonna be able to marry and when I do, that song is gonna play smile

"Surfer boy/girl, be true to your school", etc. Beach Boys suck. When they actually made music about other topics, they were golden. Which was rare, but they were good for a period of about 4 years in the 60's.

Yeah, that was me that started that thread too smile. So I would actually rank good vibrations higher in the works of Brian Wilson, and I think it's a closer contender to the greatest pop song of all time too. But anyway, yeah God Only knows is a fantastic song, even though I think the pet sounds album is slightly overrated (I think the same of sgt. pepper too though).

Probably in my pick would be:

I Want You Back - Jackson 5

and

Tender Love - Force M.D.'s

Both were catchy, hamonic, easy to remember and most of all straight to the point.

Not my favourite song by any means, but Bohemian Rhapsody has got to be up there nod

It's one of those songs that has always been around me and I think I kind of took it for granted, but never really listened to it.

A month or so back, I actually put the song on and listened to it properly, as a work, a song... It's unbelievable and so hard to imagine where something like that comes from.

It's probably so good that there is nothing you could add to the song to improve it, and probably nothing you would take away.

...i would agree with you...all that surf crap i am unable to listen to but once brian wilson was able to free himself a little bit from record company control and made music he really wanted to...he made stunning music, pet sounds and smile are almost untouchable as musicial masterpieces and the beach boys continued making great albums until 1971 when they became a cabaret act.

Once I saw some footage of Brian circa 66' sitting at a piano alone and
he sang "Surf's Up" and it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever
heard he was probably 24 and at the peak of his genius
