He did the same thing at this show. Of course, I supplemented my name with P's! I was at that show too! Wasn't it cool when Prince played the keyboard and guitar simultaneously during Head? Was that place rocking and thumping or what?! As for P-Funk, no one ever came close or ever will come close. Their combination of acid rock, space funk, conceptual themes, humor and musical virtuosity, inventiveness and power is unrivaled and always will be. This cannot be overstated and they cannot be overated. Listening to each one of those albums when they first came out in the 1970s and seeing them live back them was truly an orgasmic experience unlike anything else. Prince has come closest to matching it for me. Also, they were so great in so many different permutations, especially Funkadelic, Parliament, Bootsy and P-Funk All-Stars. I just wish their new album would come out. It has been 10 years now since the last one, TAPOAFOM, which I really loved. The first record of theirs I ever got was Mothership Connection when I was in junior high. At first, I did not get it because it was so different and I was so young. But then it clicked and I was completely hooked. I spent the next several years as a die-hard funkateer and scoured every used record store I could find to dig up the then-out-of-print Funkadelic gems. The last one I found was in the early 1980s -- a brand-new copy of Cosmic Slop I found on the Venice Boardwalk. That completeted my collection and I have never missed a release since. Later in the 1980s and early 1990s I met George, Bootsy, Bernie and the rest and had many of those old album covers signed by several P-Funk alumni. They proudly grace my walls, some of them much to my wife's chagrin! If ever anyone walks to seriously talk P-Funk, I have lots of stories. 4ever Funkin' On, Bobba! Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.

Back in 1989 when George was doing publicity for the Cinderella Theory, I arranged an interview at Warner Brothers Records because I was a music magazine columnist at the time and a huge fan. While talking with George in Burbank, I invited him to dinner. To my surprise, he accepted! Since he had no wheels, I picked him up at his hotel in Hollywood where he was registered under a ficticious name and you had to knock the secret knock to get in (opening drum pattern from Cosmic Slop). Once inside, it was a revolving scene of debauchery involving all the P-Funk All-Stars and family members. It was a trip. I then drove George to my condo in Culver City, jamming mix tapes I had made (I was also a mobile/club DJ) all the way. George was not inside my pad more than 5 minutes before he began rolling Js on my coffee table! By the time we got to the fancy dinner my girlfriend had made, we were all too wasted to eat! George had a cassette tape with him of the entire album By Way of the Drum that was supposed to get released on MCA but never did. He gave it to me in exchange for one of my Funkadelic mix tapes. That unreleased album on tape was later stolen out of my car when my car stereo was stolen. Does that suck or what? In any case, I hung out with the P-Funk crew that entire week and for years later I would see their shows in the L.A. area and go backstage and hang out with them again. They would always greet me with a warm embrace. I later wrote a long cover story for a now defunct music magazine called My Dinner With Dr. Funkenstein. Michael Hampton later hit on my girlfriend and invited her back to his hotel! That was not too cool.
Next time, I will share my story about going on a boat ride with Bootsy ... Peace, Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.

Hotlegs said: blackguitaristz said: The guitar leads are beautiful, man. The way the whole song is mixed too, I think, is what really does it. The vocals, backing and lead, the piano, yeah, it's killing. Parliament, as popular as they are, I STILL feel they are truly underated. I wonder if folks truly grasp the... deepness. Is that a word? I mean, Parliament-Funkadelic, to me, was the most versatile and most conceptual band. They put other 70's funk, r&b, rock bands to shame. See, Parliament could play Zeppelin. Zeppelin couldn't play Parliament. Hell Yeah. After Maggot Brain, P-Funk set their bar. I haven't seen any rock group that will be or ever get to that level period. Hands Down.
