"The Clash were s**t!" at least that's what Geldof is saying.
Irish rocker SIR BOB GELDOF has accused his former contemporaries THE CLASH of being a s**t band who faked their punk image. The ex-BOOMTOWN RATS star is still bitter the SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO hitmakers came to epitomise the serious punk revolution in late 1970s Britain, while his band were marginalised. Geldof rages, "The Clash had outfits designed for them. But somehow they were supposed to have more integrity? Why? This ersatz passion was just b**locks. "I didn't like their records until LONDON CALLING (1979 album). I said 99 per cent of the music is s**t and I was right. It hasn't survived. "All that 'Hey right! The revolution!' tripe drove me mad! F**k off, you c**t. JOE (STRUMMER) and MICK (JONES) wanted to be MICK (JAGGER) and KEITH (RICHARDS)! "Plain as f**king day! Yet we were frozen out." http://www.contactmusic.c...0were%20st a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

I like the Clash, their probably overrated, but their music is awesome, so is the pre- london calling stuff. I like Geldoff and he can say what ever the fuck he wants, he was there when the whole shit went down.

Yeah, Geldof was there and I do like the Rats, but its not like their music "survied" any more than, say, Give em Enough Rope. [Edited 3/12/05 18:27pm] a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

He is also, however a fourth rate musician who wrote third rate songs and fronted a fifth rate band. The Boomtown Rats had five good songs and influenced no one. The Clash made five great albums, three of which are timeless. Sandinista and Combat Rock were so ahead of their time it took bands twenty plus years to even begin to match their scope and ambition. Bob's just bitter that he's got plenty of respect but no musical credibility. [Edited 3/13/05 11:09am] There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Great line, but please expand on it and tell us why. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Well, to be honest, at times the Clash's politics turns me off, but to suggest that the Boomtown Rats were equal to the Clash is silly. There's a reason that people remember the Clash and not the Boomtown Rats!

yea ,.... no reply as yet, maybe theres no reply,.... because to suggest the clash were easy listnin (if thats what was meant) couldnt be further from the truth the clash challenged their followers when they released ,.....
london calling sandinista combat rock i remember myself buying LC and thinkin what the fuck is this !!! i was used to the kinda almost straight punk fast and furious tunes of the first 2 albums ! (and yea i kno there was a reggae flavour to some o the early stuff too). after a few spins LC became my fave album of all time !!! as u can see by my avvie. this thread title should be changed to,..... THE CLASH WERE SHIT HOT !

Other than the charity work, does anyone else consider 'The Wall' to be Bob Geldof's definitive work? I can't watch him without thinking of the scene where he shaves his eyebrows off or the one where he's the Nazi rock star. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Actually, not quite. The Boomtown Rats hit No 1 in the UK with a song called "Rat Trap" in 1978. It was like The Eagles playing a version of Bruce Springsteen's "Jungleland" for fragile old folk. In 1978 The Clash released (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais, one of their finest ever singles. It didn't even make the Top 75 then, but who's playing "Rat Trap" now?
