I've heard many fans say that it's not a terrible album...just a terrible Bowie album.

it was the album that bowie released the year i started to really get into his music, so there's a sentimental value to that album for me. i know all the songs on NLMD probably much more than should be allowed.

actually though, i listened to 'tonight' all the way through a couple of weekends ago, and i have to say it's not aging badly. with time, i can kinda hear what he was trying to do with it...i guess it's one of those things where something snaps and you hear an album from a completely different perspective for the first time, but i don't have the disdain for it now that i used to. it's still a deeply flawed album, but i like it. and it's freakin' brilliant compared to 'never let me down'.

I've never listened to Tonight in full, but I've always thought Blue Jean and Loving the Alien were pretty snappy singles.

They most definitely are. Some of the stuff he was doing in '85 and '86 was quite nice too.

I loved Absolute Beginners - one of the redeeming moments of the Glass Spider tour (that and sounds of the silent age were the standouts that I remember).

I'll be arsed if I can remember underground, though - that was from labrynth, right?

'as the world falls down' is pretty good. it's usually considered to be the stand-out song from the labyrinth soundtrack.

lol

y'all are SUCH BAD INFLUENCES!!!

at least on my check book smile

Endy my friend, I say screw the Bowie albums and just go pick up the Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack at Cheapo. Being able to listen to The Reaper Rap WHENEVER you like is a life changing thing.

I don't think I will ever go and buy Tonight and NLMD. I stumbled across the videos of the albums on the Best of Bowie DVD and that stuff's just depressing. I totally, totally hate that 80s sound. And from what I read from you, the compositions aren't worth it either, right?

'tonight' is worth it...what videos came from that album that were so depressing? 'blue jean' and 'loving the alien' are among his best clips, in my opinion. there are some duds on the album, but overall it's pretty solid in my opinion. NLMD, however, is strictly for the completists. nod

Didn't mean the vids. It's just that the song starts, and I just cannot believe that Bowie could sound like that. Actually, I don't even remember which song it was, 'Time Will Crawl' propably.

just got my 'david live' CD in the mail today! woot!

some initial thoughts:

1. wow, this sounds nice. better than ever. very noticeable.
2. i thought luther was on this. looks like he's not. ah well...sad shrug
3. earl slick had just graduated high school when this was recorded?!? damn!
4. tony visconti's liner notes proclaim there are no vocal overdubs: "DAVID LIVE is david - live!" oh, i believe it. lol
5. i'm very impressed. i still favor 'stage', but i think the preference is purely personal.
