I think people on here generally post on what's popular at the moment. It's a website dedicated to a pop artist after all. It's the "I'm holier than thou" bullshit attitude that people take on that's really annoying. As if they themselves were some great musician or even played an instrument at all. If I started a thread on Pablo Casals, Wendy Mathews, Yerba Buena, or Bajofondo (that's it..start Googling..lol)..most likely many wouldn't respond to it anyway. Some are only judging a person on their favourite artists (posts). But in fact may be surprised at what an extensive catalogue of music they may actually have at home. Posting your hate on every single thread about an artist you don't like...well that just puts the thread right back on top of the list! People really try to make their opinion, fact! Wether it be by calling names or attacking someone's ethnicity, sexual preference or even country of origin. That to me is more pathetic than someone's musical tastes. There are many other sites dedicated to "real music" so if pop music isn't your cup of tea, try them. At the end of the day I think most people here agree about how disposable most pop music is nowadays. Take it for what it is...is not as serious as you're making it. Or maybe to you it really is.

I tried to make this very point to an Orger not more than a week or two ago only to be met with comment telling me I had a "superior attitude." I agree wholeheartedly with your point, Chico. If you don't like somebody why waste your time talking about them? All you're doing is giving that person more attention. [Edited 3/14/05 12:58pm]

Anxiety said: sometimes it takes me a while to really "get" something that is supposed to be great because so many people are building it up and it gets so hyped, my first response is to rail against it. that's just because i'm stubborn and when you tell me i'm supposed to like something, my automatic response will be to say "no i won't!"
but when the hype dies down, i might have a listen to something on what i consider to be "my own terms", and i'll have a better ability to either appreciate it or else think to myself, "all the big whoop...over THIS?!" sometimes i'll show up for the zeitgeist - i bought the outkast album the day it came out because i knew it would be great, and there are a few other big craze albums i bought early on because i was excited by all the hype and i liked the artists. some albums and some artists, though, i appreciate that they're good at what they do, but i just can't get into 'em. i just kinda have to agree to acknowledge their talent and accept that it's not my thing. like morrissey and bob dylan - i know they're both really well-loved, but neither really do much for me. there are artists i really like who are influenced by both or either of them, but so what, ya know? i guess it's what makes us different. nah, i don't wish i was like anyone else. that would be a big bore.

TheOrgerFormerlyKnownAs said: The thread on disappointing albums got me to thinking about this. There are albums like Nevermind or Bloodsugarsexmagic(sp) that a lot of people seem to think are classics but you just don't think so. Do you ever wonder why you don't like Norah Jones Alicia Keys or Beyonce and the world is fawning all over them? I know I do. It is something wrong with my hearing?
But you like The Cure, and that's all that really matters.

I feel like this with music, literature, movies and everything else I'm into. Except for some people here, nobody I know fully "gets it" when I start talking about music and what it is that moves me. You should see me get rejected over and over by various music stores when I go in with my list of cd's, it's just sad. Sad in one respect, me knowing that I must be on the right musical track in another respect.
My "Zony Mash" thread died a terrible death here last week because nobody knew or wanted to know, MJ and constant complaining about bands people don't like took a priority but I'm just trying to do my part around here. I've learned a lot from the great musical tastes of the Org and I'm just playing it forward. Chico, I thought I was the only one that bought that Yerba Buena cd, Great thread! almost forgot, hell no I don't want to be like everyone else - edit [Edited 3/14/05 13:29pm]

I've always been into music that most people my age and race don't generally like and i've often wondered how that happened. I guess it's because i've been exposed to many different styles of music, different people and different cultures. Some people may see me as strange but I think it's more strange and boring to just go along with what everyone else likes and approves of.
Rock n' roll!! I know what you mean. I'm a Midwest transplant, 31 years old, gay white dude who listens mostly to old school R&B and lately, 70s rock/pop. I try to get other people my age excited about Supertramp, Deniece Williams, EWF, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, etc...it just doesn't happen. I've tried turning some of my friends onto the music I like and some of them got into some stuff but they're more open minded. Anyway, you've tried and if they're not interested, It's their loss. You keep rocking to Steely Dan and don't change a thing.

since I was a child I've always liked "different" music to what a lot of friends and family like...the major one being Kiss lol. I cop so much flack for it but I don't care because everyone has different taste and likes whatever they like

she even looks boring. which is why i call her borah jones. but back to the topic. i've even noticed when i like something that someone else's like, like an album, my fav song is never anyone else's fav song. like on Musicology, who's fav song is "Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance." my two other "Prince" friends said that they were bored by it but i love it. Hell, i want to direct a video for it if i could. Join me under the waterfall
