Do You Ever Wish You Were Like Everyone Else?

The thread on disappointing albums got me to thinking about this. There are albums like Nevermind or Bloodsugarsexmagic(sp) that a lot of people seem to think are classics but you just don't think so. Do you ever wonder why you don't like Norah Jones Alicia Keys or Beyonce and the world is fawning all over them? I know I do. It is something wrong with my hearing?

I know what you mean, but I guess the answer is we all have different tastes. I will never in a million years understand what's so great about people like Madonna, Britney, Kylie, 50 Cent etc. Having said that, I know there are many people on this site that don't like the artists I do, such as Bob Dylan and Norah Jones.

Don't ever wish you were like everyone else. These are the things that make us unique and interesting. If we all liked the same shit, the world would be boring. Enjoy what you enjoy and be proud of it (unless of course it's Britney that you like wink lol )

I dig what you're saying but for albums that are considered classics, I kinda wish I 'got' them, you know?

Yeah, I know what you mean.

But I tried caviar once, and it tasted like heavily salted ass to me. I mean, y'know, to each his own and stuff.

I know what you're saying. It's not a matter of actually liking the album, it''s a case of understanding the hype.
I don't think there's anything an individual can do to understand the hype over an album if they don't understand it.
Like "Come away with me," the most famous example on the org. I can never understand why it won all the Grammys it did. It won as many grammys as Thriller to my knowledge. I can understand Thriller's success and hype, because you can look at any pop figure today and relate Thriller's success to it.
But 20 years from now do you think that Come away with me by Norah Jones will have impacted anything?
I think a lot of the time the media is misinformed, or my mind just can't click with it.

Maybe you should give some of them another chance. Norah's first cd is beautiful. Perfect for a quiet sunday afternoon at home. Although, IMHO Nevermind still sucks. It's not my musical style at all. Perhaps that's the case for you too?? Sometimes, things just aren't our style no matter how many times we hear them or how many people tell us how great they are.

I don't get the Super love for Madonna. I understand the respect she receives for being corrective and all the reinvention stuff and I do respect her but I think that vocally she's blah and no more talented vocally than some of the very young singers we dog out today....shrug

I don't get it..

I know what you mean... it kinda makes you feel left out in a way. But then again there is so much great music to listen to and we are all different and certain things just grab us... There is always someone somewhere that can share the love you have for certain music. So much music... so little time...

there are times when i feel like i just don't get the joke. I wonder "what am I missing?" but then i realize 2 things. 1. most people don't listen to lyrics the way i do (meaning they don't really pay attention to lyrics at all) so lame or binine lyrics mean nothing to them because they're not paying attention anyway. and 2. i just have better taste in music than most of the mainstream. i mean, who wants to me w/the majority. the majority of the people in this country think bush is a great president. at least great enough to re-elect him. do you really want to have that mindset?

I think with Norah's first cd many people were looking for something other than the usual pop crap. Some wanted something more adult and sophisticated. Norah gave it to us with Come Away with Me.

I have the album and enjoy it. i guess i didn't really expect it to win 8 grammys and take album of the year. The hype just sort of arose after the grammys

i actually think Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of the greatest rock songs of all time, even though it took me years to figure out what the hell Kurt was saying. lol The rest of that album does nothing for me. Norah: I dunno. I have only heard two songs off her first album and I can't get past them. Don't Know Why this album won eight Grammys. I'm sorry but that song bores me to tears.

I don't get it either, but I do respect her body of work and how long she's been able to hold people's attention. I think she's a lousy singer and her music is quite average. Others think she's the greatest ever! shrug

You don't think she's the queen of anything because you yourself are not a deluded queen. It's the hag worship that sort of gets on my nerves. I like her and always have, but I've never been one to worship her every move.

Anxiety

sometimes it takes me a while to really "get" something that is supposed to be great because so many people are building it up and it gets so hyped, my first response is to rail against it. that's just because i'm stubborn and when you tell me i'm supposed to like something, my automatic response will be to say "no i won't!" lol

but when the hype dies down, i might have a listen to something on what i consider to be "my own terms", and i'll have a better ability to either appreciate it or else think to myself, "all the big whoop...over THIS?!" barf

sometimes i'll show up for the zeitgeist - i bought the outkast album the day it came out because i knew it would be great, and there are a few other big craze albums i bought early on because i was excited by all the hype and i liked the artists.

some albums and some artists, though, i appreciate that they're good at what they do, but i just can't get into 'em. i just kinda have to agree to acknowledge their talent and accept that it's not my thing. like morrissey and bob dylan - i know they're both really well-loved, but neither really do much for me. there are artists i really like who are influenced by both or either of them, but so what, ya know? i guess it's what makes us different. nah, i don't wish i was like anyone else. that would be a big bore.

I know exactly what you're saying and i've thought about this before. I've always been into music that most people my age and race don't generally like and i've often wondered how that happened. I guess it's because i've been exposed to many different styles of music, different people and different cultures.I do like some pop main stream stuff bu then I can get into some pretty wacked out shit too. Some people may see me as strange but I think it's more strange and boring to just go along with what everyone else likes and approves of.

Rock n' roll!!

I know what you mean. I'm a Midwest transplant, 31 years old, gay white dude who listens mostly to old school R&B and lately, 70s rock/pop. I try to get other people my age excited about Supertramp, Deniece Williams, EWF, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, etc...it just doesn't happen. lol

And to directly answer the question, no, I don't wish I were like everyone else. But I do wish more people had as broad a range of musical interest as I do. That is what I like best about The Org.
