Where are the black bands?

Don't get me wrong, I know the answer to that intellectually. But it just hit me that artists like Jamiroquai and !!! are funking out, and the once diverse crop of black talent has been whittled down to crap-hop. I mean, even Ready For the World was a band! It seems the synths and sequencers totally took over that side of the music industry.

We miss you:

Earth Wind & Fire
Mint Condition
Chic
Living Color

Not that they don't ever perform, but could they have another hit? Hell no.

Black bands don't and won't sell because hip-hop has bullied the market. It is presumably cheaper to produce. These acts hittin' the charts basically scare their audience into listening to their music. Until the audiences get tired of the facade, black musicians will have to toil in the underground or hook up with other rock bands. Or hit the adult contemporary/jazz markets.

That's to fill up the stage and take the place of where a band used to be set up. Concerts don't look like concerts anymore, they look like thugged out Broadway musicals.

Do you mean like house or techno? At least they come up with an original groove or melody, even if it is overly repititive.

You can't really blame the laptop. It at least allows innovation to a generation that grew up without music. No music in school and unless they listened to Rock, there was almost as little on the radio.

Besides if there were no Laptop, there would be no Moby. Where would the world be without that one?

Supply and demand basic ecomonics. Black consumers do not demand quality in their music and as a result major record companies supply blacks with inferior products as long as it is cheap to manufacture and there exist a demand. Stop buying it and demand live bands again!!!

While there are a few orgers on this site who know good music and have a respect for live music, most are too young to know the difference and so don't care. You can tell this by their interest in artists. "Who thinks Usher is cute?" "Do you like Beyonce's dress she wore at the awards?"

Everyone around here hates Usher - what are you talking about?

And bitching about Bayawnsay's dress has NOTHING to do with musical taste.

Oh my bad, I forgot listening to anything not being played on the radio won't win you any "cool" points.

All that glitters aint gold-- and all thats funky aint black.

No more black bands because everybody wants to do it on their own-- everybody before was in somebody's band. Now, everybody wants to sing or rap.

Have you looked at any threads lately? Only ABeautifulOne likes Usher, and no one listens to modern radio on the org, as far as I know. Everyone thinks it sucks - and it sure as hell isn't a status symbol for "cool" points (falloff) around here.
