we all get that exciting rush when we hear one of our favorite artists is coming out with something "hot and new"..we fall into that "_____ is taking back to his/her roots" PR machine, only to be let down by a subpar album. who has disappointed you lately? I think the last album i was really disappointed in was Damita Jo. I'm not the biggest Janet fan out there, but I keep waiting for something great to happen...since Velvet Rope, which I thought was a damn good CD. Her last couple of ones have just been like, aiight for me...not horrible, just kinda aiight.

I hate to sound like a broken record on the org, but Invincible by Michael Jackson really made me disappointed.

I remember like a year before the album was actually released, reading articles saying it is his best work and it is a fresh beginning for michael jackson. These coming from people who listened to the accomplished effort before the actual release.
I remember being so fucking excited cause MJ hadn't released anything for 6 years (aside from BOTDF).
I remember skipping school that day to go out and buy it and have a listening day.
Let's just end off this story by saying i wish i went to school that day

prince "musicology"

Bobby Brown "forever" (good god that album is really crap 4 me)

Janet "damita jo". Didn't buy her last couple of albums, but I thought she would finially give up on them crap slow jams.....I was wrong

Jordan Knight "self titled"- Fucking still love "give it to you", and there are some lovely jam and lewis ballads on there, but rest is average. "close my eyes" is wonderful tough.....

New edition "one love". Even though "hot tonite" was not a huge hit, it is a good song, shame that only the second half is any good. The first half is really sub par. Like "home again", jam and lewis save the album!

Bell biv devoe "hootie mack". "poison" album is a stone cold classic all the way through. Follow up wasn't, with only "something in ur eyes" being the track i still play today.

Babyface "the day". i LOVED "How come how long" duet with Stevie Wonder, but rest, with few exceptions like "everytime I close my eyes", is filler.

Joey Lawrence "soulmates". This is his second album, dropped in 1997. Where did the uptempo pop go? "ven ven comingo" saves the album.

Jane Child "Here not there". Should of been a newjack record. Luckily 3 of the songs are newjack, rest is grundge.....WTF?

Riff "to whom it may concern". Completely different from their debut. A few nice tracks, but still very dissapointing.

Guy "III"...WTF? What a waste.....purely in it for the money.....

I loved the album at first. The first 3 songs were and still are killer. Mike was not following trends on them first 3 cuts. Name any tracks that sound like "heartbreaker"? The album heard as a whole is pretty bad, but individually, album is good actually

I remember when i heard "you rock my world" on radio 1 whilst in the shower. I was like "this sounds so much like MJ, but it's too average to be him". But I was wrong. Though now I like the song.

disspointing albums would have to be most of Wu-solo albums after 1996 like Reakwons Lex Diamond Story, Digital Bullet, Inspectah Decks Movement. Tical 2000 and that other garbage Method mans latest album, forgot the name as quick as i forgot the songs..

Any new album by an old artist. I know they are not going to come back with their old sound so I'd rather see them just stay retired instead of ruining their reputation.

occasionally. DamitaJo is the only prime example within the last several years. i think the big one before that was Rave.

I never really get disappointed because I listen to music online before I buy it. The last time I was truly disappointed was with Prince's Emancipation.

Recently I was pretty disappointed with albums by Tori, Gwen, and U2.

i was really disappointed when i listened to Jill Scott's "Beautifully Human". There's no doubt that the girl can sing, but she is in need of good producers or something....

I haven´t herd a great album in a while now. Most of them dissapointed me. The last album that actually suprised me how much I liked was Stripped by Christina.

As for Mj and Prince - I am not crazy about Musicology either - there are only about 3-4 songs that I really like. And as for Invincible - I really like about half of the album -he rest is an avarage stuff.

But I was really dissapointed with Beyonce´s Dangerously in love. AFter watching her breathtaking performance of Dangerously in Love at the Divas show on VH1 that brought me to tears - I expected more.

I saw that album in the record store back then and started to buy it. Something told me not to because I had bought another album of their's in the 1990s called "Ain't Nothing But A Party". Well it sure as hell wasn't "nothing" and it was far from a "party".

My biggest disappointment was in 1999 also with an album called "United We Funk". This album featured new tracks from various old school funk groups such as The Dazz Band, The SOS Band, The Barkays, Con-Funk-Shun, Rick James, Roger & Zapp, etc. Every song had a hip hop feel to it and none of the songs got past midtempo. There was absolutely nothing "funky" about it.

I know nothing abot that old school funk but incidently I picked up a Rick James album called "urban rapsody" and it is pretty good. Rick can keep up with trends. I have no idea if anyone owns this album but I got it dirt cheap so i thought why not? Anyone own this?

Without getting bogged down into specific albums, I think the main problems are to do with marketing.

Record companies often cotton on to what the fans want to hear, and so start pushing a new album as if it is exactly that. How many times have U2 fans heard the words "Back to basics" or "back to their rock roots"?

The lesson I guess is to not believe what you read about music before you hear it.

Also, WHY DO SO MANY BANDS GO SO CRAP SO QUICKLY?!?!?

Bands/ artists lose their fire and urgency SOOOOO soon these days

Maybe the money changes them...?

That's a perfect description. "Never Say You Love Me" is my favorite cut also. Some of the cuts are fine but the album is missing what Rick James is famous for....the FUNK!!!
