what are some of the most overrated albums?? some 'o' my choices

JAGGED LITTLE PILL: im sorry, but i just can't stand ALANIS MORISETTE. her voice is so fucking terrible, i have no idea how this album sold like 30 million copies

CONFESSIONS: both Usher and this album are highly overrated

DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE: Beyonce's stellar debut; this album gets depressing after the first 3 songs.

MILLENIUM: add to this any other album from the teeny bopper era examples; "baby One More Time", "No Strings Attached", and any other "critically acclaimed" Backstreet Boys Album

RAY OF LIGHT: i still dont know what's so great about this album

DOOKIE: I nevr liked Green day, this album is so oooovvvvveeerrrrraaaatttteddd

NEVERMIND: An album full of Kurt Cobain's depressed drug addicted groans

I agree but you you're going to get a lot of shit for that Nirvana comment (even though it's completely true). I can't wait to see the first, "GRUNGE SAVED US FROM THE SCOURGE OF DANCE POP AND HEAVY METAL!!!!!" comments pop up.

Now, as for Britney, Backstreet Boys, 'NSync, et all. - don't you have to be RATED at first to become OVERRATED?

I agree somewhat. But only in relation to their other work. Many consider that to be their definitive statement. But I like "Check Your Head", "Ill Communication" and "Hello Nasty" all much more. I guess it gets so much praise cuz of how radically different it was from what came before. They got so much better as they went though.

As a Madonna fan i agree with the Ray of Light statement.... It is quite overrated, especially by her fans on the message boards... blah! I still like the album nontheless, just a little overrated.

Michael Jackson's Thriller wins the cake with me. Off the Wall is superior.

Christina Aguilera's Stripped: my friends were practically begging me to buy the album saying it was a masterpeice. Didn't do much for me at all.....

Janet Jackson's Velevet Rope: A great album indeed, but like ROL, it is way overblown by the Janet fanbase..... I much prefer the "janet" album

Here, My Dear is Marvin's MOST misjudged album in his career IMHO.

What makes you think its overrated, tho?

I pretty much agree with everyone's choices except Here My Dear.

I don't know if I would place Backstreet has being overrated, if you're talking about critics. It sold a lot, yes but than what happened? It's rating as stood the test of time, so I wouldn't put it on there.

The problem with Nirvana is the fact that if it wasn't wasn't the album of the deacade, what was? I would say that it, along with "In Utero" and "Unplugged" are all really great albums and maybe "Nevermind" was the best of the bunch. I think the reason it is thought so highly of is the short but sweet influence it had musically. All of the sudden, good alternative rock was heard on the radio and on MTV. MTV, dare I saw, was great in 1994! I think it was more about the impact of "Nevermind" and not the actual CD. That being said, what happened to bands like Nirvana, the Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins? They just don't make them like they used to...

Sgt. Pepper-Don't get me wrong, a great album, but the best rock album ever? No way, not even the best Beatles album. So much of it rehashes and in many ways palliates musical ideas they'd played out on Revolver, which, along with Abbey Road and the high points of the White Album, blows this out of the water.

Dirty Mind-Our intrepid hero's most overrated work. There were funkier and harder rocking songs on his first two albums, this just has slightly better blending of styles and cheaper production values, plus the best song is the one he stole from Morris Day. Granted, it is the first album where he'd developed a more original sound, but not the masterpiece or even the great leap forward it's cut out to be.

Exile On Main Street-It's good, quite good, but it seems like one continuous song to me and though I've listened to it multiple times I can't even remember any of the individual tracks afterward.

Aquemini-Sorry but I enjoy Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/Love Below a whole lot better. This is an album that has become overrated among fans in backlash to how much higher rated their subsequent two albums were. Good, but not outkast's best by any means.

What's Going On-Not that it isn't a great album it's just that there are at least two socially conscious R&b semi-concept albums that are much better, one of which came before, and both of which are by artists who had much more actual creative involvement in the music (marvin didn't really write his material till the mid 70s from what I hear): Curtis by Curtis Mayfield, and Innervisions by Stevie Wonder.

Pet Sounds-as with all the others in my list, It's an album I enjoy and appreciate but I don't think quite deserves the status it's acrued. I rarely listen to anything other than the hits (wouldn't it be nice, god only knows, sloop john b) and there isn't a hell of a lot of stylistic or emotional range. At it's worst it's treacly and whiny and just because Paul McCartney loved it doesn't mean that it's remotely like the Beatles or that you'll like this if you liked Sgt. Pepper.

Bitches Brew-I'm not the sort to label this a rambling incoherent mess, but Miles has done much better fusion albums (In A Silent Way, Dark Magus, Live Evil).

We're only In It For the Money-This is not Zappa's masterpiece nor is it the anti-sgt. pepper, it's just one in a series of countercultural satire concept albums he made in the late sixties and this one isn't better or even necessarily as good as his others.

Janet Jackson - The Velvet Rope (then again, I also happen to think the Janet album is overrated among her fans)
Madonna - Ray of Light

I'm going to agree with those that listed "Ray Of Light" and possibly "Thriller". Both are great albums but I think Madonna's best are "Erotica" and "Bedtime Stories". "Ray Of Light" is really cold and distant but does have some great songs and music.

Without a doubt, one of the most overrated albums of any era is The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. Not that it's terrible, but it in no way lives up to the hype.

Another overrated album is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I am a big Beatles fan but Sgt. Pepper is probably their weakest album, song-wise, of the Post Help! period. It gets a lot of praise for it's advanced studio techniques, deservedly so, but in my opinion the songs just aren't as good as those on Rubber Soul, Revolver, The Beatles and Abbey Road.
