Singers that have created vocal stylings?

There are certain singers who have probably unintentionally created their own vocal stylings.

For Example.....

Mariah Carey (I think she was the first singer to start doing "scales" and "riffs" that you hear every r&b singer do now. Seems like Xtina took that shit and ran with it).

Green Day (They've spawned many sound a likes though they all suck. Every pop/punk band that has come out over the past 5 or so years has that annoying nasal twang, despite Billy Joe not sounding quite like that). Obviously Blink 182, Sum 41, and Good Charlotte were taking notes.

Kurt Cobain (kurt created the "constipated grunge groan", hehe (I made that up myself! biggrin Sound a likes include, Puddle of Mudd.

So who else can you add to this list?

If by "scales" and "riffs", you mean "melisma" and "dolphin whistle", that was nothing new.

Eddie Vedder , invented that "hot potatoe in the back of your throat sound"
(that's the best way i can describe it)
although for him it was natural
Many tried to copy it ;Bush , Creed , etc

Well the "dolphin whistle" was created by Mini Ripperton but all that "wailing" started with Ms Carey.

Alanis Morrisette has also created the "fake angry female hostility" sound that Avril Lavigne also now immitates.

Anxiety

i think david bowie created a certain vocal sound that became popular with most new wave acts in the '80s.

as for green day, i'd say it's a safe bet that billie joe got his vocal style from the clash and social distortion. or, if you're a 'high fidelity' fan, stiff little fingers. smile

Even if Mariah didn't create that style of singing, you have to admit that she crafted it and made it more popular. Now everyone does it.

Excellent list. I'd also humbly submit:

Louis Armstrong: The ULTIMATE vocal stylist.
Al Green
Curtis Mayfield
Johnny Hartman
Frank Sinatra
Hank Williams, Sr. (don't like country but still).

As for hip-hop, which I include for the hell of it, it's a short list:

Rakim
Tupac
Biggie
Chuck D
BDP
Plug 1 a/k/a Kelvin Mercer
MF Doom
Mos

I don't think Mariah was da "pioneer" behind da sound she has...and i say this even having been a fan of herz when i was in my early-mid teenz lol if she sounded different 2 everyone else when she first came out in what late 89 early 90- it was only cause of her individual resonance. Anyone can have similar style whether you're one of those ridiculous mousekateer poppetz or some kid off da streetz. No matter what style- it'z what soul da individual has...how they allow sound to escape their lipz- da way they breath...etc. Most people start off mimicking da style of someone they admire...some depart a bit from dat and experiment...and some people continue copy it completely. I know how tempting it can be to conform when datz what seemz to be da most marketable thing 2 do, but it'z a shame- and dat'z what has caused a (in my opinionz) lack lustre drop in da body of alot of music dat is out these dayz.

It's a bit of a "and me too" world out there i'm thinkinz!!
