Why Do U Love/Hate Bubblegum Music?

Even in 2005, Britney's Baby One More Time still have some bite! But now, she's trash! And doing a cover of a Bobby Brown classic didn't help. And BTW, I don't like Toxic at all. And I'm happy that Kylie Minogue rejected that song from the Body Language album.

At one time, *NSync was the closest thing to New Edition that was available. And then man-diva Justin went solo and had success. And then Justin & Janet gave us
all a Superbowl Halftime Show that are still fresh on our minds even today!!!

And then Usher destory Justin by becoming only the third artist in music history (behind The Beatles & The Bee Gees) to have 3 songs in The Billboard Top 10 USA Singles Charts within THE SAME WEEK!!!! This alone made Usher the new king of pop, despite MTV claiming Justin (and risking poor race relations in the process).

Boys II Men. New Edition/Bell Biv Devoe. Jodeci. B2K. Debbie Gibson. Christina. NKOTB. Color Me Badd. Bobby Brown. The Backstreet Boys.

Face it: We have a love/hate relationship with bubblegum music!!!

Sometimes we love it when we were young. Sometimes we hate it when we became adult.

But what is your take on this issue? cool

I think part of the reason why people love/hate these songs is because it was barely anyone's choice that we heard these songs.. they were everywhere and alot of us got sick of them at the time.

These songs are related closer to popular culture than to our rich musical history, which makes them disposable.

No, for me for the most part, it's always been a hate relationship..lol Well, hate's a strong word, so it's more like a waste of time for me.

I'm not a big fan of it. Most of the artists really have no talent and rely on studio and background music to make sound "half-assed listenable." There might be a song here and there that I like, but for the most part, it's not my thing. It's also sickening when you hear ti over and over and over again. mad

Well, I try to like "serious" artists. Not necessarily people who sing about serious issues, but people who I think are making a career of music and are not just in it for the fame. BUT, I do confess that I have a weakness for mindless, corporate pop music too. The way I see it, a catchy song is a catchy song. Whether it's the Beatles, or the Monkeys.

biggrin As i've said before, i went through a major life change and got hooked onto bubblegum again.

Why I love it? it is disposable, happy, energetic, fun, corny, easy to listen to, easy to understand, doesn't want to be art, doesn't try and be art, funky and in my case of late 80's-early 90's, it sounds amazing production wise. Many people love Beatles, stones, even frank sinatra, sort of all in the same gang. It just happens that my sorta bubble gum has dated due to that load thunk of a drum machine that was used at that time.

I agree with you. I love OLD bubblegum music from the 60s and 70s... a nostalgic childhood thing maybe...? And I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I liked Hanson's "Mmm Bop" when it came out - it reminded me of the older bubblegum hits. redface

Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight? - Lonnie Donegan

Oh me, oh my, oh you.
Whatever shall I do?
Halleleuah,
The question is peculiar.
I'd give a lot of dough,
if only I could know,
the answer to my question, is it yes or is it no.
Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost over night?
If your mother says don't chew it, do you swallow it in spite?
Can you catch it on your tonsils, and you heave it left and right?

You nailed it with your time frame.
1967-1975 is considered the "classic-age" (i'm laughing at this term as I type it) for bubblegum.

There's even a specific British bubblegum contingent.

I LOVE bubblegum music from this period. I have 45 singles from The Archies, The Partridge Family, Ohio Express, 1910 Fruitgum Company, Sugar Bears, Banana Splits and The Archies.
