paligap said: we talked about this before, But I wonder if Ron Isley's vocals on Move Over and Let Me Dance may have had an influence on the purring vocals that Jimi would later have on some of his own tracks....on the other hand, Ron's vocals don't sound like that on any of the other early Isley brothers tracks that I've heard...at any rate, I think the feel on that cut is definitely a precursor to a component of the Experience sound... Agree with you on Hendrix attempting to assimilate some Ronisms. Along with "The Architect", Wilson and other R&B artists he'd played with. Most were unsuccessful. It becomes painfully ovbious when he sings against Buddy Miles who does have that official R&B voice thing happening. (albeit overbearing at times, we've discussed Buddy's "rooster vocals" too ) However these influences probably contributed to the unique speak/sing vocal style he eventually developed. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I love the Isleys since knee high.
Diff their standard is good. I love 'for the love of you' and 'hello's it me' and love an old song' 'all because I love you' from about 1966. Their new album is cool as well. Ron is MRBIG!!!! For purely personal reasons my fav is 'who's that lady' cos Ron clocked me at Royal Albert Hall pointing his cane and then came over and sang that all that song to ME!!!. At the end of the show he came over to me and shook my hand only and then was off in a puff of smoke. I treasure that moment because Ron is the voice as far as I am concerned. engima said: RipHer2Shreds said: Which version of Who's That Lady was it? Parts 1 and 2. You answered my question in a round about way They recorded That Lady twice. Originally recorded in the 60s as Who's That Lady, they had a hit with a bossa nova style production of the song. The second recording was on the 3 + 3 album as Who's That Lady and was more in tune with their funk/rock mix of that period. Both versions were hits. [Edited 3/11/05 10:41am] | |

FunkMistress said: The Mistress is a little embarrassed to say that she's only now really getting into the Isleys' work. What I've heard so far makes me want to kick myself for depriving myself for so long!
Some songs have left me literally speechless (Voyage to Atlantis , Ain't I Been Good To You), and others I've always liked, but am somehow hearing with fresh ears (For The Love Of You, Don't Say Goodnight). So right now, if I had to pick a favorite it would easily be Voyage to Atlantis. The first time I listened to it (thanks again, Dan!) I thought, "Oh my God, this must be what heroin feels like." But I'll be collecting in the next few months, so my answer may change. Come back to me. There's a REALLY nice 3 volume compilation called It's Your Thing: The Story of the Isley Brothers that you might like. Vol 1 is 1957-70, Vol 2 1971-75 and Vol 3 1976-96 and includes a lot of the tracks listed here. Even though I already had a lot of their stuff already, I had to add this one to my collection. BTW, my favorite is For The Love Of You; no, wait, it's Atlantis, or maybe Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight...oh well..... Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.
