Damnit TRF, quit telling people your age at the time.
Then I have to post behind you looking like "The Old Codger" of the board. wall

lol hug

Steve Paul's The Scene was one of the most happening spots in NYC at that time.
Muscians would come there and jam together after their main gigs in the city
(Jimi Hendrix, Mike Bloomfield, Johnny Winter, Jim Morrison, etc.)

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The Scene was the place the top groups got together to jam when performing at New York's bigger venues. Getting past owner Steve Paul at the door was no mean feat, if you got past Teddy first, his sharkskin-suited maitre ‘d, up on the sidewalk. Paul was a brash 21-year-old kid, and if he did ordain your entrance to his club it was not before he unceremoniously put you down. That was his cover charge, a patented one line insult. Rarely, if ever, did he charge his regulars admission. I can't remember Steve ever insulting Linda [Eastman/McCartney], though. Her passion was photographing musicians and his was giving them a home. Linda and Steve were simpatico.

Tiny Tim always warmed up the house, strumming camp show tunes on his little ukulele while singing along in that nasal falsetto he made famous years later on the Johnny Carson Show. When Tiny decided to finish, it could be one song it could be seven, the Super Groups would get up and jam. That's when Linda sprang to action. She worked seamlessly, blending in with the act. No matter who they were, how famous or infamous, Linda got in their face. That's how she got her portfolio together. For a while Linda was as much a fixture at The Scene as Tiny Tim. That's really saying something.

The most remarkable jam I ever saw was between Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison with Felix Cavalari and The Rascals playing backup. Jim Morrison was sloshed out of his mind, prancing lewdly around Jimi, chanting incoherently. Jimi, stoned but in a much cleaner groove, whaled back sharply on his guitar. It was the first time these greats ever jammed together, an electric moment for all. As soon as it began Steve Paul locked the doors, and they improvised, nonstop, until dawn. Linda got it all on film. She was one of Jimi's favorite photographers. I remember him commenting how comfortable Linda made him feel. They were both quite shy, a mutual trait they shared in common.

I used to hang around outside the club and watch some of these folks going in.
(TOO YOUNG to get in. Did you hear that? TOO YOUNG!)

The Mandala were very popular and played there quite a bit.
They did stellar arrangements of R&B tunes like Ain't No Mountain High Enough, I Was Made To Love Her, etc.

Remember...

...Monti Rock III? (never knew what his claim to fame was but he was a periodic guest on Johnny Carson.)

He used to go in there carrying his own personal...

...standing ash tray. disbelief

Aaah, the good old '60s.

Just out of curiousity - is this thread in reference to the show where Morrison got up on stage and started screaming how he'd like to do you-know-what to his baby in the you-know-where?

I'm not sure how this boot qualifies as "over-rated" when it has never been hailed in any circles, even among Hendrix geeks (of which I am one). It is an interesting moment caught: Jimi taping for himself a low key club jam, Morrison stumbling into the club and onto the stage drunk as a mofo... But I've never heard anyone claim this to be essential or wonderful or anything really. This boot has been released under so many names and is so easily available it is rather the butt of many jokes. Also, that other report is exagerated, they didn't jam until dawn & there is no video or photo residue from that evening. I definitely understand how somebody would be disapointed if they confronted this recording with high expectations, but there are some interesting, and yes even good, moments on it: the version of "Red House" performed uptempo to a "Crossroads" (Cream version) style riff and the smoking "Bleeding Heart" (if you ignore Morrison's rambling at the end). Again though, it's hard to call this recording "over-rated"... who rates it that highly?! I certainly have never heard it spoken of in such a positive manner!! My comments here may be the nicest I've seen/heard about it actually!!

P.S. Another not true but funny rumour about this evening's jam: after the jam which is heard on that release Morrison got down on his knees and blew Jimi right there onstage...
