Is it OK if I say that I've never really liked America? and that I've never heard the 12" version? You can probably live a pretty content life without ever hearing Yo La Tengo - I like them a lot, but they are pretty much the epitome of indie-rock, for better and worse. They're great, but they're somewhat limited. I'm now listening to Love of the Common Man by Todd Rundgren - probably the last song before I hit the sack.

You know, i've heard this type of terminology used by others before. I'm just curious. What's wrong with skilled musicians playing long-form solos? In terms of artistic expression, I equate that to... an artist be limited to a 1" x 1" canvas a writer being limited to writing stories no longer than 1 page a comedian's stand-up routine being limited to 1 minute Your thoughts? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I know fairly little about Zappa, and even less about jazz-fusion. I was a little too loose throwing around derogatory language. However, I will say that an awful lot of the music that gets categorized as fusion or even straight jazz seems completely impenetrable to me. I find it comes off as musicianship for the sake of musicianship, with relatively little concessions being made for laymen listeners like myself. That undoubtedly results in playing of the highest possible caliber, but I’m not sure that it makes for particularly good or interesting music for a general audience. Take (forgive me for using this extreme example) Om by John Coltrane – an album I picked up a few years ago when I was trying to develop a taste for jazz. Is it possible for anyone who doesn’t “understand” Coltrane’s playing here (meaning you’d need to be a musician) to enjoy this album on any level? It’s probably been done, I’m sure, but it’s inconceivable to me. I guess what I’m getting at, if I can articulate this properly, is that music is most enjoyable to me when it works within boundaries. There is a lot of pleasure to be gained from listening to a talent play at a very high level, but if it doesn't take place within certain parameters, it just won't mean anything to me. A playwright, a comedian, a scriptwriter has to be concise, and work within limits or he’ll have no audience besides friends and family. I think the same rules apply to music. And really, isn’t there just as much (if not more) artistry in a well-constructed two minute and fifty second pop song as there is in Sketches of Spain? Last night when I was making my stupid little flippant remark above I was listening to a great piece of bubblegum pop called “The Rules Have Changed” by the New Pornographers. Now there’s no way that these guys are serious musicians in any true sense of the word. This song is about as basic as you can get - new wave-y sounding organ, incredibly cheery background vocals and a chorus that will be in your head for ages. I don’t understand why that song works, or why I couldn’t stop thinking about it all day at work, but it provokes a reaction in me that I’ve never, ever experienced with a jazz recording. Perhaps that’s my flaw – maybe I’m just a lazy listener, but I don’t think that’s unique to myself. Sorry for being so long-winded, but you asked a good question and I tried to give a good answer. and I apologize if my original post was a little crass.
