Love them, but I'm actually not that keen on that particular song.

I Heard You Looking by Yo La Tengo is playing.

I don't own a single thing by yo la tengo. i don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. probably a bad thing.

meanwhile, the ol' shuffle play has served up the 12" version of 'america', which i hope ends before my nomad battery dies. lol

Is it OK if I say that I've never really liked America? and that I've never heard the 12" version?

You can probably live a pretty content life without ever hearing Yo La Tengo - I like them a lot, but they are pretty much the epitome of indie-rock, for better and worse. They're great, but they're somewhat limited.

I'm now listening to Love of the Common Man by Todd Rundgren - probably the last song before I hit the sack.

it's okay if you say you don't like 'america'. lol to be honest, i've never really been thrilled with the lyrics, but i do love the 12" version with its long, droning/hypnotic instrumental.

now that i've survived that, i'm listening to 'i am stretched on your grave' by sinead o'connor and i really, really, really want to put on a big sack dress and dance right now. nod

I've not heard it, I'm afraid. I appreciate Bjork - her artistry, her willingness to jump off the deep end musically, but I generally don't enjoy her records all that much.

I'm listening to Rock n' Roll is King by ELO - I needed something snappy to put me in a good mood before I turn in.

Never heard of it, I'm afraid - but I looked up their listing on the AMG site and saw that they're in the "jam band" genre. I enjoy that style as long as the band doesn't go overboard with the Zappa-style jazz-fusion wankery.

I'm listening to I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass by Nick Lowe.

nick lowe's another one who's stuff i've never heard.

i'm listening to...

Shut up!!!

You talk too much...
You talk too much...
You talk too much...
You talk too much...

Hey! You over there, I know about your kind
You're like the Independent Network News on Channel 9
Everywhere that you go, no matter where you at
I said you talk about this, and you talk about that
When the cat took your tongue, I say you took it right back
Your mouth is so big, one bite would kill a Big Mac

You talk too much You never shut up
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never shut up

You talk about people, you don't even know
And you talk about places, you NEVER go
You talk about your girl, from head to toe
I said your mouth's moving fast, and your brain's moving slow

You talk too much You never shut up!!
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never shut up

You're the instigator, the orator of the town
You're the worst when you converse, just a big mouth clown
You talk when you're awake, I heard you talk when you sleep
Has anyone ever told you, that talk is cheap

You talk too much You never shut, up!!
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never SHUT UP!!!

Talking is the one thing, that you can do best
You told the cavity creeps, to watch out for Crest
You never have the story, right and exact
And then you always try to bore me, with your yakkity yak

You talk too much And then you never shut up
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never SHUT UP!!!

Everyday you are out fighting someone in the street
And you're always fighting someone you know ya can't beat
Then you wonder how, you got in this mess
Just think of what you said, then take a guess

You talk too much You never shut up!
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never SHUT UP!!!

You're always spreading rumors, whether bad or good
You're the damn Walter Cronkite of the neighborhood
The Barbara Walters, and the Howard Cosell

You always come around, with a story to tell

You talk too much And then you never shut up
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never SHUT UP!!!

Said it's everybody's business that you love to mind
And talkin to you, is like dropping a dime
You're spreading the word, like it is your job
You should be a stool pigeon, who works for the mob

You talk too much And you never shut up
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never shut up!

A big blabbermouth, that's what you are
If you were a talk show host, you'd be a star
I said your mouth is big, size extra large
And when you open it, it's like my garage

You talk too much And then you never shut up
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never shut up

You always like to gossip, just like a girl
You talk so damn much, it's outta this world
When you're reincarnated, in your second life
You won't be a man, you'll be a nagging wife

You talk too much Then you never shut up
He said you talk too much Homeboy you never SHUT UP!!!

SHUT UP!!!
SHUT UP!!!

Twenty-five hours, eight days a week
Thirteen months outta year, is when you speak
I'm tired of listening to the garbage you talk
Why don't you find a short pier, and take a long walk

You talk too much Then you never shut up!
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never SHUT UP!!!
You talk too much You could be, out of breath
You talk too much Man you naggin me to death
You talk too much Tired of hearing you speak
You talk too much Eight days a week
You talk too much Then you never shut up
I said you talk too much Why don't you ever SHUT UP!!!
You talk too much Then you never shut up!
I said you talk too much Homeboy you never SHUT UP!!!

I have no idea what this is, but I know I love it. I firmly believe that the world would be a much better place if everybody would just shut the hell up every now and then. Especially that woman who works in the cubicle outside my office who spends half her day yapping on the phone with her thug kids.

You know, i've heard this type of terminology used by others before.
I'm just curious. What's wrong with skilled musicians playing long-form solos?

In terms of artistic expression, I equate that to...

an artist be limited to a 1" x 1" canvas
a writer being limited to writing stories no longer than 1 page
a comedian's stand-up routine being limited to 1 minute

OK, well I’ll start by admitting that my comment was every bit as thoughtless as you probably believed it to be. I know fairly little about Zappa, and even less about jazz-fusion. I was a little too loose throwing around derogatory language.

However, I will say that an awful lot of the music that gets categorized as fusion or even straight jazz seems completely impenetrable to me. I find it comes off as musicianship for the sake of musicianship, with relatively little concessions being made for laymen listeners like myself. That undoubtedly results in playing of the highest possible caliber, but I’m not sure that it makes for particularly good or interesting music for a general audience.

Take (forgive me for using this extreme example) Om by John Coltrane – an album I picked up a few years ago when I was trying to develop a taste for jazz. Is it possible for anyone who doesn’t “understand” Coltrane’s playing here (meaning you’d need to be a musician) to enjoy this album on any level? It’s probably been done, I’m sure, but it’s inconceivable to me.

I guess what I’m getting at, if I can articulate this properly, is that music is most enjoyable to me when it works within boundaries. There is a lot of pleasure to be gained from listening to a talent play at a very high level, but if it doesn't take place within certain parameters, it just won't mean anything to me. A playwright, a comedian, a scriptwriter has to be concise, and work within limits or he’ll have no audience besides friends and family. I think the same rules apply to music.

And really, isn’t there just as much (if not more) artistry in a well-constructed two minute and fifty second pop song as there is in Sketches of Spain? Last night when I was making my stupid little flippant remark above I was listening to a great piece of bubblegum pop called “The Rules Have Changed” by the New Pornographers. Now there’s no way that these guys are serious musicians in any true sense of the word. This song is about as basic as you can get - new wave-y sounding organ, incredibly cheery background vocals and a chorus that will be in your head for ages. I don’t understand why that song works, or why I couldn’t stop thinking about it all day at work, but it provokes a reaction in me that I’ve never, ever experienced with a jazz recording. Perhaps that’s my flaw – maybe I’m just a lazy listener, but I don’t think that’s unique to myself.

Sorry for being so long-winded, but you asked a good question and I tried to give a good answer. and I apologize if my original post was a little crass.
