I agree.

but there's a point where ya' just gotta be concerned about the way someone looks.

the drawing of a circle around one's eye goes back to the times of Socrates, where the officials would draw the circle around their eye to show that they were judging or officiating.
(I'm paraphrasing.)

Hey Mochalox,

What do you call this circle thing? I'm curious now. Never heard of it. Have never seen images/statues that make reference to it either. Did a quick search...found nothing. When I have time later, I'll look into it.

What I did find gave me a newfound respect for Saadiq, however...he comments on the circle:
"..."Instant Vintage, that was me coming out for the first time," says the Oakland, Calif., native. "That was me overseeing my career. Like, on the cover of that record, I had the makeup artist draw a circle around my eye like the dog on Little Rascals. It was fun to watch people make up what it meant. I didn't even know what the hell it meant. Later, I thought it meant that I was focused, that I had my eye on what I wanted out of my career."..."

Hil-ar-io-us!

It's always cool when one gets the joke. This way the joke is on us. It would have been better if he had left some clues somewhere on the cover or in the song lyric...something. When you play it that straight...you have to leave clues.

Anyway, I think it's all very funny. Funnier now.

This is one of those times I wish I had been paying attention in class. I zoned in and out that day.

Follow the money and ask that question again.

The live music discussion is relevant but when 2 turntables and a microphone is filling up arenas, why would they spend money on musicians?

Know what makes me mad? It's the term "live DJ". What the hell is a "live DJ"? Is a "dead DJ" a jukebox? There are only two sources of music, live or pre-recorded. DJ's and jukeboxes play pre-recorded music, bands play live music, it's just that simple!!!

And what's a DJ if he/she can't scratch?
cool

BTW, I'm talking about turntablism. Yes, using turntables to scratch your vinyl or CD is a musical instrument in itself now!

While there are a few orgers on this site who know good music and have a respect for live music, most are too young to know the difference and so don't care. You can tell this by their interest in artists. "Who thinks Usher is cute?" "Do you like Beyonce's dress she wore at the awards?"

Everyone around here hates Usher - what are you talking about?

And bitching about Bayawnsay's dress has NOTHING to do with musical taste.

Well said!!!!!

Please give me a break! Anytime pre-recorded music is used, the user can not take credit for creating music.

DJ Shadow
FatBoy Slim
Public Enemy
Sean "Puffy" Combs
N.W.A.

Even Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Remember Janet's Rhythm Nation? THAT Song was built around a Sly Stone's sample.

Yes, anyone can sample. But not everyone can use a sample in a very creative way. Think about it! wink
