He's not 100% African American...geesh, does anyone understand that like most blacks in america, atleast 80% by now, are of mixed heritage. Black ppl don't really understand this I guess...because of our own ignorance to ignore the past. I've heard in many interviews from the late 70's throughout the 80's Prince mention that his background is Black, Italian and Native American, so therefore he is mixed... Just because he's PRO-Black now, doesn't mean he didn't say those things back in the day! You can clearly look at his mom and dad and tell he's not straight off the boat! As for Mariah Carey...she is a black woman, thou she's very fair complected...and she naturally has light colored hair...thou she's taken it a few step lighter, does not make her white...Black ppl have sandy brown to blonde hair also. Ppl and stereotypes...geesh, no one knows what makes up a person or race. Were all human and we should get over the race game... There's so many ppl thats mixed out here...and would only claim to be black...like "Lena Horne, Shemar Moore, Halle Berry, Rosa Parks,The Rock...etc) So its not a big deal to me and it shouldn't be to anyone else, I'm proud they stand tall and state "I'M BLACK"...were the most talented on earth and the most blessed. I'm black and proud also, but my family is of latin heritage also, and I won't deny that part of me either...because its who I am...and theres nothing wrong with knowing where you come from, even if its from a bad place, you just learn from it and move on. peace and not2war! Some of you people kill me Like I stated before there are all hues in my family. Should my caramel self, my near White looking sister & chocolate brown sister go around saying we're mixed? Or maybe only my near White looking sister should say it since that would seem acceptable to outsiders, yet our chocolate sister might get a second look making the same claim, no? There is White & Indian in my family HOWEVER despite the makeup of my grandparents, MY parents are Black. Therefore my sisters & I ARE Black. People can claim whatever they want to claim but at a certain point the shit becomes suspect. There's a lot of muthafuckas out there itching to claim whatever they can so they're not "just Black" & that attitude/self hatred bugs the shit outta me. Like Black ain't "good enough" And if most Blacks in America are mixed anyway what the fuck are we really claiming? Why the need to claim mixed if we ALL ARE genius?? Especially when folks wanna throw that "all American Blacks are mixed anyway" which we are but come on - who is "just Black" if we're all mixed? Only people of a certain shade?? How far back do you go w/ the "I have this & that in my family" - at that rate nobody is really Black, so what the fuck??

But in Mariah's case; she constantly brings it up. Embrace it, address it, then let it go!!!!! Another thing that really 'chaps my hide', is this incessant need to say "black" (i.e. "strong black woman", "misunderstood black woman" etc...) Once we see them, race will be apparent. But always having to put race on yourself or your 'title' just alienates (in a way) other people from being interested in anything else you'd have to say after that point. Be proud of your race, and wear it as a badge of honour if you will. But quit making it a point of controversy when it's really not.

The problem with Mariah is she creates the misunderstanding by being incomprehensible. Ego Trip's Race-O-Rama called her a tragic mulatto. She is. I'm sure she will send a letter to Essence for labeling her a black woman and have them retract it. However, she does seem to be more "black" these days. It's all about the money and what race will benefit her for the moment. She has insinuated in past interviews that her "whiteness" was more of a creation of her ex-husband. In one of my Jet magazines, she sad that she used to say she was black when people would ask her what race she was (before fame) and would immediately follow-up with "what are you mixed with?" She decided to stop saying she was black and just list what she is mixed with. It's a little silly because all black americans are mixed ----- Are all African-Americans trying to past themselves off as white to sell CD's? No, just her

No one ever said "Black" wasn't good enough!
Whether Prince is Blue or Purple, I don't honestly think he'd lie about his mixed heritage...come on! Prince is a black man of course, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a mixed background. I don't like the comment "YOU PEOPLE", because your talking to just one person here. Don't highlight my post and then say "YOU PEOPLE", because thats pure ignorance on your part. Alot of black are finding out more and more about their heritage and thats a great thing...so to accept everything about your racial makeup is great...I don't see anything wrong with it. Whats the big deal!? Anyhow...as I stated b4, I am a black man, very proud of it...but I'm not gonna go around and ignore my latin roots also. I've always been taught to embrace all of me and be proud of where I came from...This is just stupid. I'm glad Mariah is featured on Essence, she's just as much black as anyone else is. If she's been on Latina or Jet Magazine, it doesn't matter...alot of hispanics have african roots, so nothings wrong with embracing it all. God Bless u all.

heybaby said: i thought this was about mariah? yall please dont make this a prince complexion thread. two things, i'm not sure whats goin' on inside her head but maybe she's gettin' older and seeing things in a different light(no pun intended) about herself or maybe she really is trying to capitalize on being black i dunno. but i've noticed that many black celebs who've avoided being pinned down as black or of the black community to appeal to the masses have eventually "come home" due to losing star power or some sort of respect overall. i've seen it with O.J. simpson, Michael Jackson, and janet jackson for that matter after the super bowl scandal.
You took the words out of my mouth! That's exactly what I was going to say. it's really a shame they so many black people try to assimilate themselves with white folks. Be proud and embrace your damn heritage! Everyone does.
