Mariah's problem is that she picks which race she wants to be as she drops every single album. She's not misunderstood, she's just full of shit.

I like Mariah. I really do; but I think a lot of her "controversy" or "drama" is self created. I don't think I've heard anyone in recent years even discuss her race. Until she brings it up in an interview. They're are many mixed raced celebrities; Lenny Kravitz, Prince, Halle Berry, etc...

He's far from albino. He's just a light-skined black man. Both of his parents are black. I have cousins his complexion.

there are very few African Americans... who are fully 100% African. my mother works in an office of mostly black women and they are the ones that told my mother that. And i've read in places both of Prince's parents had mix heritage.

She's been on the cover of Jet and Latina magazine....

The problem with Mariah is she creates the misunderstanding by being incomprehensible. Ego Trip's Race-O-Rama called her a tragic mulatto. She is. I'm sure she will send a letter to Essence for labeling her a black woman and have them retract it. However, she does seem to be more "black" these days. It's all about the money and what race will benefit her for the moment. She has insinuated in past interviews that her "whiteness" was more of a creation of her ex-husband. In one of my Jet magazines, she sad that she used to say she was black when people would ask her what race she was (before fame) and would immediately follow-up with "what are you mixed with?" She decided to stop saying she was black and just list what she is mixed with. It's a little silly because all black americans are mixed

Thats very true, she said that he even went far as making her wear the dakrest clothes most of the times and shoot her face from a different angle(so they could hide her so-called "ethnic" side).

But she was as wrong as him for letting that happen.

Also, notice how they(Ebony & Jet) ditch her ass after she got divorced from Tommy?

Anyway, from the get-go I've always read that she was proud of BOTH of her racial sides and I guess some black people were bothered by that.

She also said, she neva heard how mixed people are being called "Zibras" untill she went uptown many times(thats where her grandmother was).

I must agree, this subject is pretty tired...But, who really knows anything unless they have studied their lineage. So as fans, we know nothing...can't judge the book by it's cover...that's why we have people saying that Mariah is white and Halle is black..that's why we have people saying Prince is a light-skinned black man....one of his parents were Creole and that is obvious, but I don't hear people saying that Sheila E is have black/latina. They say she is Creole/latina, why because she has the last name Escovedo? I agree with Mariah, yes, she is misunderstood. Maybe this is her chance to come real with rumours, etc. What people don't realize (unless you are biracial)society tries to make us choose one race over the other. I get tired of people suggesting or assuming that they know my race(s).

i thought this was about mariah? yall please dont make this a prince complexion thread. two things, i'm not sure whats goin' on inside her head but maybe she's gettin' older and seeing things in a different light(no pun intended) about herself or maybe she really is trying to capitalize on being black i dunno. but i've noticed that many black celebs who've avoided being pinned down as black or of the black community to appeal to the masses have eventually "come home" due to losing star power or some sort of respect overall. i've seen it with O.J. simpson, Michael Jackson, and janet jackson for that matter after the super bowl scandal.

Prince is of mixed heritage!
He's not 100% African American...geesh, does anyone understand that like most blacks in america, atleast 80% by now, are of mixed heritage.

Black ppl don't really understand this I guess...because of our own ignorance to ignore the past.
I've heard in many interviews from the late 70's throughout the 80's Prince mention that his background is Black, Italian and Native American, so therefore he is mixed...

Just because he's PRO-Black now, doesn't mean he didn't say those things back in the day!
You can clearly look at his mom and dad and tell he's not straight off the boat!

As for Mariah Carey...she is a black woman, thou she's very fair complected...and she naturally has light colored hair...thou she's taken it a few step lighter, does not make her white...Black ppl have sandy brown to blonde hair also.

Ppl and stereotypes...geesh, no one knows what makes up a person or race.
Were all human and we should get over the race game...
There's so many ppl thats mixed out here...and would only claim to be black...like "Lena Horne, Shemar Moore, Halle Berry, Rosa Parks,The Rock...etc)
So its not a big deal to me and it shouldn't be to anyone else, I'm proud they stand tall and state "I'M BLACK"...were the most talented on earth and the most blessed.

I'm black and proud also, but my family is of latin heritage also, and I won't deny that part of me either...because its who I am...and theres nothing wrong with knowing where you come from, even if its from a bad place, you just learn from it and move on.

Its a trip how folks keep calling her a "white woman" becoz of a superficial reason.

Coz, when you go down south to New Orleans and see some of the black folks in there,,,Mariah would look like Wisley Snips next to them.

If you look at his parents and his siblings that are just light African-Americans. I am sure due to Slavery he has some white people back in his family tree but P is not even light enough to pass himself off as white.

I just think he said all that crap in the begnining of his carreer because he did not want to get lumped in to the RnB genre.

Let me take a cynical point of view, I see this as an attempt to get one the good side of Black women's view of her by appealing to her blackness and hoping that Black women are more forgiving and understanding of her. I certainly haven't read the article yet, I won't speculate on what's in it. If she is looking for a way back into the spotlight, she may be hoping that Blacks are more willing to give her a chance than others. I've read before where she acknowledges that her father is Black but he was from Brazil, as if being an American Black is something to be afraid of. I'm more than willing to be wrong in my assessment, let Mariah tell us the truth.

She's developed the habit of trotting out apparent prejudice against her biracial roots at the launch of the last few albums. Some people may have trouble believing that since she's gone out of her way throughout her career to appear as white as possible, but who knows. Maybe she's being genuine, maybe she's not. It is a struggle for many people.
