lol I haven´t heard much of Melle Mel eversince he´s joined the Sugarhill Gang, but I think he was quite great on "Piano" (the whole album).
I´ve been "taking lessons in HipHop since the days of Wildstyle and Stylewars, my King remark about Melle Mel was a bit tongue-in-cheek because that´s how he used to see himself....as KRS once said, " kings lose crowns, but teachers stay intelligent".
Mel was on German TV in the eighties when Police Academy 6 ( or 5 or 4 ??) came out , he was promoting his VanSilk collabo 12 " called " What´s the matter with your world ?" and during that interview his selfesteem was pretty high , saying he´s not only the best rapper on this planet but also the best rapper in the whole universe...it was actually quite cool how he said it. I think I still have that on VHS somewhere....
Do you know that 12" ? Borrowed heavily and freely from "Pop Life" and "Sign of the Times".
That was before the whole sample case of Biz Markie I guess.
I kind of respect him for getting rid of his coke addiction and getting into shape again.

I was never really into Spoonie Gee´s style, but to each his own.

But how could I forget the R ....Rakim.

Then again, there´s a huge difference between live and studio with a lot of rappers....including the great ones.

hey if I can still keep the label of kid then I'm satisfied but you oughta know damn well Em could slaughter muffugaz in a freestyle long before 8mile..... to be an excellent DeeJay you must learn to match your beats and blend your music....as to mastering rap you must be prolific and metaphorically creative but you must also do this not only on paper but in a true freestyle fashion.....Eminem is one of the best and he gets paid for it! Pac was too and it's a shame his talent only made it as far as it did.

there are others such as Redman, Method Man, Ice Cube (not as a freestyler though) WC, Biggie, that top my list but the ones I said first always stood out...

I'll bet I sound like a commercial hip hop junkie but hey.... the underground shit don't pay like the mainstream...

I'm actually gonna defend Em a bit. Before he hit it big, that cat RIPPED up underground tapes. That shit was hot. His style now gets him paid, but he can rhyme when he wants to.
