I Won A New Bowie Reissue CD!!!

To celebrate the reissue of "Stage" and "David Live", David Bowie's web site held a contest in which Bowienet members were asked to identify details from various semi-obscure 7" singles...being that I was cooped up at my mom's house over the weekend and had nothing better to do, I revved up the ol' Google and entered the contest.

And I was one of the ten Bowienet members who won the "Stage" reissue! Pretty nifty, eh? The best part is, I knew I'd be buying both of these albums and now I only have to fork over the dough for one of 'em! Nice!

AND, "Stage" was the album that got me into Bowie in the first place, so it seems strangely fitting that I should win a copy of the reissue on Bowie's site. Crazy. woot!

But if ya go over to Bowienet now and check their news section (free to anyone who visits the site), you'll see "Anxiety" among the list of contest winners. I'm so proud! touched

they hit the stores this week - they haven't been available in stores for over ten years, back when ryko released their reissues of these albums.

That's great! There's a contest on bowiewonderworld too about winning a 'presentation disc', but I don't think it's the same thing. Maybe you should enter that too. biggrin Do you think these'll be readily available in stores or a tougher find like the Outside/Earthling/Hours ones?

i think they should be far easier to find than the outside/earthling/hours discs...they're available on amazon.com, apparently as domestic versions - i'm guessing they'll be in wrecka stows first thing tomorrow morning.

"david live" is good, but if you have to choose between the two, i'd recommend "stage" - it still rocks my socks off.

indeed it does! and the tracks have been re-ordered to reflect the way the show was performed (it was originally tracked to separate "old" songs from the performances from the "newer" albums at the time).

and more cool news from bowienet!!!

Thirty years ago today, the first taste of David Bowie's latest direction was launched upon a completely unsuspecting European public, in the shape of his first slab of "Plastic Soul", 1975's Young Americans 7" 45 single. An edited version had been released in the US the previous month.

Though a select few US fans knew of Bowie's flirtation with the Philly sound, (having experienced it during the tail end of the Diamond Dogs tour, which come to be known as the Soul Tour or the Philly Dogs Tour) the single was quite a shock to David's European fans (albeit a pleasant one) and indeed to anyone who was expecting something else in the Diamond Dogs vein.

Of course, the previous single, Knock On Wood, had been more than a hint of things to come and David scored another Top 30 hit in the US and a Top 20 hit in the UK with Young Americans.

IMHO, the songwriting (particularly the lyrics) owed as much to David's latest favourite artist, Bruce Springsteen, as it did to the sound of Gamble and Huff. David recorded three Springsteen tracks during the Young Americans sessions.

Radio stations in the UK and the US were furnished with an outrageously butchered 3.11 minute mix, (see demo disc above) almost 2 minutes less than the 5.01 minute full single mix which was the same as the upcoming album version.

Anyway, I'm getting spottery again... The point of this news piece was to inform you of a new 30th Anniversary double disc edition of the Young Americans album due in a few months.

Without the aid of a time machine we certainly have no chance of hitting the exact 30th anniversary date. However, if everything goes to plan, there are going to be some very nice surprises on this one.

I'll post more details, such as release date and tracklisting as I get them.

biggrin

woot! That means it's only about a year until Station to Station's 30th Anniversary edition comes out, and only two until Low and Heroes. drool

Can't wait to pick up Stage, either. My vinyl copy has been worn thin over the years, and the promise of all of these extras just puts me over the edge.

I thought that I had read somewhere that these CDs were only going to be released on DVD-A or SACD. Did they end up releasing it on a regular CD, as well?

Aw, all those re-issues... they're cool and all but I'd have to trash my EMI CDs and don't have them for THAT long.

i think they're gonna release it in a couple of formats, regular ol' CD being one of 'em. i'm not sure what the other format is, and unless the DVD-A is a hybrid that includes the "cracked actor" documentary (which i'm sure it won't), i'm not terribly interested. i did however get the hybrid disc for "reality" with the weirdo david lynch-esque video EP bowie made for the album, and it's a purchase i'm glad i made. nod

i don't mind getting rid of my CDs from his last round of reissues - they were pretty threadbare and the packaging was nice in that it was utilitarian - lyrics, tracklistings, a bit of info on the recording sessions, etc. - but i thought those reissues were adequate at best. so when a new reissue comes out, i give those reissues to my boyfriend to further his bowie education. lol

i won't part with my ryko reissues, though - too much sentimental value, plus i still think those reissues are cool as hell.

Right! But I think the album that needs it the most would be SOTT. Don't know why, but that one sounds worse than the ones before.

Anyway, back to Bowie: I think it would be really interesting if the Station to Station re-issue (I suppose there will be one) has the "dead mix" of the album that Bowie wanted to do first as bonus disc or some songs mixed like that.

this is a re-issue of my initial post, now (hopefully) without spelling mistakes:

I skipped both the Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs 30th Anniversary editions; they're getting really skimpy with what they leave out, and what they include ("Diamond Dogs K-Tel Best of Edit", my ass!), but there are some gems that they could put on the Young Americans 30th, and the possibility of some Station to Station tour gems on the STS 30th is really intriguing!

Not that I'm one for being difficult or anything ( lol ), but you can get better versions of "Heroes" on various 1978 tour bootlegs. These all have a false ending.

That said, everything on "Stage" is pretty exceptional. The versions of "Station to Station" and "TVC 15" have never been bettered. The version of "Stay" on here is brilliant too.

You'll notice quite a few differences in the new mix of "Stage". I'm not getting rid of my Ryko version.

Here's looking forward to next year's rumoured 2 CD 30th anniversary reissue of "Station To Station", with the famous Long Island/"Thin White Duke" show on the second disc.
