If you are of a certain age and haven't recorded for a while......

Does that make you "washed up"? I always hear people say that about older artists that haven't made music for a number of years. That does not make an artist washed up in my book. Being washed up is when you release albums and no one is buying them and you were selling records like hot cakes "back in the day". What's you take on it?

In my opinion. being washed up means that you no longer have anything to say. Youve nothing worth while to contribute.

A classic example would be Roseanne. When she tried to get back on TV with a cooking show it was pathetic because she had nothing to say, as opposed to her sitcom where she had plenty to say. She was in fact, washed up.

I guess I always thought of that as being washed up. It's because I compare everyone's output to that of Prince and Madonna. M herself said it takes 5 minutes to write a pop song, and scoffed at how long it took Michael Jackson to release an album. It's 5 years and counting since the last Sade album. Then again, Lover's Rock was slammin', and it took 8 years to make that one.

A lot of 1960s artists like Diana Ross, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, etc. had hits in the 1980s. Also, a lot of 1970s artists like Brick, Con-Funk-Shun, Cameo, etc. spilled over into the decade and had hits also. Even an artist like Tina Turner, who hadn't had a hit in years, was welcomed back with open arms.

It wasn't until the 1990s that older artists could not get a hit and a lot of it was to do with not being able to get airplay because their stuff was not sold out to a hip hop sound. The Bar-Kays, Cameo, and War all had a nice album in 1990s but the radio would not play them. Some of the female artists like Diana Ross, Donna Summer, etc. can have a little success with house music but it would get played mainly in clubs and not on the radio. Cher was one of the rare exceptions with her smash hit "Believe". Teena Marie is enjoying some success with her new album but, of course, the whole damn thing is ballads and ballads will always be in style.

I'd much rather see the older artists put out an album and attempt success without selling out to today's music. If that doesn't work, I'd rather see them retire with dignity rather than selling out to today's type of music, like the Barkays did with their new album (which by the way, I'm glad to see it didn't sell evillol).

The world may see these artists as washed up but I see today's music as a whole as washed up so it really doesn't bother me what they think because they have no taste.
