tori mentions prince in her book

for those of you not in the know, along with tori amos's new cd, the beekeeper, she also released a book titled piece by piece. the book is basically about her experience as a woman, mother, wife, singer, songwriter, and performer. i haven't had much chance to read it yet due to my required class readings but i did sit down today and check out the chapter on the music business.

apparantly tori had a rather nasty falling out with warner's subdivision, atlantic records, similar to that of prince's fued with the company. among many other things, prince is mentioned in the book when discussing this awful falling out between tori and the suits. this is the excerpt with the prince reference:

[trying to figure a way out of the atlantic contract]
"I've warned them ,Tor, that you could do what Prince has done." "Yeah, and what aspect of what Prince has done have you warned them I will do?" He said, "By performing on television and writing 'slave' on your face." And, without any emotion in my voice at that point, I said, "Of all the moves i can make right now, guys, and there are not many, some white girl with red hair who has a bank account with at least something in it, who writes 'slave' on her face, will not only have no career left, but won't have any friends left, either. I mean, for Chrissake, let me have some friends here."

i just thought that was kinda funny. to think that tori's people looked to prince's antics as a possible weapon for her is hilarious. i'm so glad she has some sense and strategized something else, lol. anyway, the chapter was incredibly interesting; she even gives minor details/advise to those looking to enter the music industry. i'm looking forward to spring break when i'll have enough time to actually read the whole book.

Heck, Prince is black, and it nearly killed his commercial career! Prince's biggest FANS gave him grief behind it.

Good thing Tori is the brains of her management team!

The short of it is it's about a well-read prostitute in 19th century victorian London who is determined to move up in society.

who's the author? it sounds pretty interesting...sorta like something a female writer from the early-mid 1900's would write. i like novels that deal with gender roles (or race roles, class struggles, etc).

It's actually a guy names Michel Faber. But it's traditional in length (about 800+ pages) and it took him 20 years to write.

There's a review over at amazon.com for more details. I first heard about it because a character on Gilmore Girls was reading it and I researched the title.

I do want Tori's book though (BTW just saw her on carson Daly. Fabulous!), and Bob Dylans "Chronicles".

i saw the darson daly show too...didn't realize he still had a show, lol. as usual she was fabulous! i will admit, though, i prefer the song the way it is recorded on the cd. i like this slower version she's been doing on tv but the cd version has more "umph" to it. and her botox looks fab, too! after reading the biz chapter of her book, though, i kind of feel bad that she's gone the way of the 'tox. its clearly a business move...look younger = appeal to a wider audience. these performers really do get chewed up by the industry. i'm glad my girl is debuting her cd in the top 10!

and i will never have the time to read an 800+ page book. well, at least not until i get to ireland in the fall.

It is great that Tori did not do what P did but, let's not let the music industry off the hook. A lot of artist seem to had problems with WB and I don't think people handled his problems the right way. It appears 10 years down the road that he was smart to get out of WB and had the balls to say somthing about in public. Give credit were credit is due.

um...what are you talking about? nobody's taking credit away from anyone. in this wide world of things-not-prince, a person can give props to someone without taking them away from another.

"looked to prince's antics " Kind of sounds like a dis to me. I am not sure why you think it is hilarous after all no body wants the label to sue them. It is better to be let out of the contract.

"antics" is really the only way to describe the way Prince handled his problems with Warner Bros. surely you wouldn't described his actions as a "mature, well-thought out, dignified" response. it did acheive his purpose (or at least part of it, after all, he doesn't own his masters), but it's akin to a screaming child in a grocery store laying down on the ground demanding that his mother buy him a candy bar until he's red-faced, and she finally relents out of embarrassment.

though i wasn't even trying to get this deep with my comment...THANK YOU!! tori handled the very same situation in a much more dignified manner. not only did she refuse to release some crap filler just to complete the contractual obligation thereby dragging the fans into the mess, she took the time to figure out the most productive (both, professionally and artistically) solution. tori's fans - for the most part - had no idea of the backstabbing drama going on behind the scenes. fans had no idea, just hours before a live show, that tori had just been told her career was over; that she should close up her fallboard and hang up her clavier.

that, my friends, is professional behaviour.

I have never said P behavior was right. I think he was really afraid that his ablitly to do be in the music industry was being taken away and he had a total mental meltdown or it was all a put on to get out of the contract.

An any case he was somewhat successful and look what happen to WB. He did get the last laugh even if we the fans did not approve of his behavior.

I think he would find it funny that Tori's managment would even think about having her do the same thing. Just kind of shows how nutty the music industry really is.

While you are correct her behavior was professional we will see how many CD's she sells or concert ticket. You may not want to admit it but some of P's behavior was really good P.R.

Everybody wants to see what he is going to do next. Why don't you think fans should know about the backstabbing drama that goes on behind the scenes? I find it fascinating.

I think Tori's track record is already proven. All her albums are at least certified gold (the same can't be said for Prince) and her current U.S. tour is almost sold out (NY and SF shows sold out in less than a minute).

Actully, with the exception of Rave, NPS and Chaos & Disorder, and RC. They are all Gold. I don't count the club cd's or that awful greatest hits CD WB put about two years ago.

4 out of 25 is not bad. I am not trying to compare the artist but if you don't sell CD's any artist can be droped from a label and see their career go into decline.

'Rave' and 'The Very Best of Prince' are certified gold (the latter is also platinum). Other Prince albums that were sold in stores, but are not certified gold are 'For You', 'Crystal Ball', 'The Vault: Old Friends For Sale' and 'N.E.W.S.'.

I think the point is Tori's albums were still selling when she was dropped by Atlantic. They are still selling now as her new album will debut on next week's U.S. chart at #5. Her career is far from over despite what label executives had told her.

certification edit

i beg to differ. during prince's "dark ages" (as i like to call them), the industry didn't want to bother with him and he lost a huge chunk of his mainstream following; being a prince fan became being the butt of a joke often times. the name change thing was a pain in the ass for prince fans - there's no denying that. we were constantly having to defend him to other people, and sometimes to ourselves. all of his childish antics took a toll on both his media support and his fan base. personally, i think tori took the high road and because of that she still has success with her cds and tours. the industry didn't shy away from supporting her, in fact they continued to nurture her and allow her to remain faithful to her following. i don't think any of prince's behavour during those "dark ages" was good pr.

i don't find the backstabbing fascinating. i've been stabbed in the back by so called friends and colleagues so i don't need to get my thrills by seeing someone else's problems. i also just don't think its terribly productive to air your dirty laundry and create sides for your fans. i'll tell you what, i don't want to get lectures on shady business dealings when i go to a concert. unfortunately, that is exactly what happened at many prince concerts during those days. i think its inappropriate and selfish to drag your fans into your mess. i love prince and i love his music. i think warner bros is a shitty company for many, many reasons. regardless of those facts i don't think prince should have been trying to put his fans in the middle of it.

i have even greater respect for tori after learning how professional she is and dedicated she is not only to her career but to her fans as well.

I don't think most fans lives were disrupted by Prince's actions and don't recall being the butt of anyone's jokes. It had no bearing on my life and never defend him to anyone because I like what I like and I don't care what other people think.

I also think that he must have gotten some good P.R out it. He is still around and millions came out to see him this year. Even during the 1996-1998 he grossed about 30 million on tour. The public forgets about stuff pretty fast and appears to enjoy sticking it to industry if you look at the amount of downloading and bootlegging that takes place. The dark ages were not the big deal that you are making them out to be.

We must agree to disagree on this one.
