From "Justify My Love"....straight to "Ray Of Light"? How British of them!

falloff

Im suprised Hollywood made it on the list... was it big in Britain?

Yeah it's sad they overlooked 2 albums with some essential madonna singles..

Not to mention a lot of good ballads and "Evita" (not my cup of tea, though) within there. "Hollywood" was probably a hit in England. I think all of her singles released off the album where Top ten. Does anyone know a site where you can check British chart history for artists because I would love to see it?

American Life - #2
Me Against The Music - #2
Hollywood - #2
Love Profusion - #11

Her UK chart history from American Life era.

If you go to www.dotmusic.com you can keep up with the UK charts.

Dang! Thanks for the info. I never understood why "Nothing Fails" never got a video or a worldwide release. Shame! I hate to bug you, but where did you get those stats. I was interested in looking up the history of some aritsts and their UK chart history. Dotmusic is now Launch UK and they have the current charts, but not histories.

The Beatles? Yes. Velvet Underground? Maybe. Bob Dylan? Of course. U2? Nope. Madonna? Definitely higher than U2, but still not in the top 5 I think.

What's so great about the velvet underground? they sound like crap to me and I find their lyrics pretentious.

Oh and Madonna is definitely not one of the top five musical acts of rock n roll.

It has nothing to do with rock and roll.
it's the 5 essential acts in music, and since pop music has become such a big impact in our world today, Madonna definately applys

Just because Madonna lives in England and is married to a british bloke, Q magazine put her in the Top 5.
Compare to Aretha Franklin, Rickie Lee Jones, Diana Ross or Jonie Mitchell, Madonna is way behind them

Her body of work cannot be compared to them.
Regardless of how famous she is .Most of her songs are just not as good but more popular thanks to the media circus around her and her nude or semi nude videos.
Sex sells as they say and it is all the more evident with Madonna who has no talent whatsoever( no voice, cannot play music, dancing=average)

Madonna is a product not an artist

we all have our opinions and i feel madonna's music is terrific. Her work appeals to me more than that of Arethra that's all. It speaks to me on a personal level as it has to millions upon millions of other people.

Many people on this site take it personally when someone doesn't like who they like (ie: Madonna). I agree with you that she should not be on this list, but you know the Brits. They often choose undeserving artists for stuff like this. Take Robbie Williams. Didn't they just vote one of his songs the best song of the past 25 years or some shit like that (I may not be accurate on the 25 years part). Anyway, that song sucks and so does Williams, but the Brits love him. They also love Madonna because she talks like them now, lives there and is married to a bloke from there. They can claim her as their own now and they love it so they give her all the props in the world. She has definitely had a huge influence on music, but I would never put her in the top 5. And, I would never put her on the same list as the great master - Bob Dylan!!
