Backward messages in songs After reading the stoner album threads where someone mentioned backward messages in songs, I did a quick search & found this site rather quickly. It has samples of the usual culprits, Led Zep, Beatles, & Pink Floyd but the Pokemon chant is satanic as well?
Even Britney Spears is guilty of a backwards message(not satanic)! http://www3.telus.net/jef...kwards.htm Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven Sample Lyric: "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow" Backwards message: "Here's to my sweet satan..

Yeah, it's a lot of backward masking in songs. And not just rock. I ran a thread about this almost a year ago. Everyone knows Prince has them. People give most of the credit to The Beatles. They were one of the first to this in rock, but it's found in old blues and country and western as well. Led Zeppelin were masters at this. It's quite a bit said in "Stairway To Heaven". Robert Plant tells you in the song that words have TWO meanings. When that song is played in reverse, it's VERY CLEAR what's being said. Backward masking is not easy to do. It takes time to string words together foward so when you play it in reverse, it says something completely different and it still makes sense. That's more than just hearing a word here and there. I'm talking about complete phrases. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Backward messages are silly. It’s pretty obvious that JP and especially DB are into AC. Why don’t they just come out and say I’m evil already, instead of us listening to the music and be unknowingly influenced, but I guess that's the point.
Daria, is that the robot from metropolis in your avatar. That movie had some messages in it!!! I luv Good [Edited 2/22/05 16:35pm]

I dunno, Backwards masking is extrememly had, ive tried it myself, it can't be done right without altering lyrics
it could take days just to string up one sentence The Messages are never subliminal, its roumored Zep followed Crowley, than again Zep was always on drugs takes alot of intelligence to follow Crowley now LeVay... only dimwits follow him lol

My friends and I, when we were in high school, while stoned out of our minds, used to play tapes backwards (and breaking a lot of them trying). I remember listening to Stairway to Heaven and being really freaked out.
Who knows if they did it on purpose, Jimmy Page was all into Crowley and that bullshit...I guess it was pretty cool to your average stoned teenager...but otherwise it seems like such a waste of time.

I do it with backward guitar solos. I love the sound. Musically, it ususally sounds good. Vocally, u have to try different things for it to sound right. It's a fact that Jimmy Page followed Crowley. I wrote a thread about Crowley as well. His influence on The Beatles. Crowley is among the crowd on Sgt. Pepper. The Stones, Bowie, Prince, they all studied Crowley. I have some books that Crowley wrote. Interesting cat. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

It is so much projection of what you want to hear, although once something is suggested, you can't help but not hear that.
Britney Spears "Sleep with me, I'm not too young" the reverse of "With you I lose my mind, give me a si-"?? (same link from above) I doubt the producers/engineers would tinker around with her vocal just to make a backward message like that. [Edited 2/23/05 10:55am]

The first time I ever heard anything backwards was Parliament's "Prelude" on the "Clones of Dr. Funkenstein' album. I used to play that over and ever. I was 8 years old. Same year, I remember on Halloween, KLOS radio station out here in So. Cal, played all of the sections to "Stairway To Heaven" in reverse. It scared the shit out of me! But I kinda dug it. The only one of those that sounds like it could've been done intentionally is Stairway to Heaven.

Maybe since I can't make out the lyrics to Jennifer Lopez's new chorus,
it is in fact a backwards message. Someone reverse it!

Here's one that I'm kinda surprised not many o.g. Prince fans are not hip to.
It's on The Time's second album "What Time Is It?". Last song on side two, "onedayi'mgonnabesomebody". You hear Morris, Prince and Jessie shout "We don't like new wave" and then there is much laughter. Reverse this and you'll hear what was once laughter, now strange, gobblins from hell sounding shit and then u hear Prince's multi-tracked voice say "Hear We Come For You". Clear as a bell. Foward:We don't like new wave. Reverse: Here we come for you. It doesn't top all of the shit in "Stairway to Hell, oops I mean Heaven, but it's scary sounding. Don't listen to this alone. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Hello? The Beatles White Album!
"Paul is dead" - I think, is backwards on on "Revolution Number 9." And "Turn me on, dead man" - I forget what song that was on... my brother and I spun my older brother's album backwards on our little portable stereo that looked like a suitcase... he was not at all happy when he saw what we were doing. Hello, The Beatles OWNED backward masking untill Zeppelin took it to a higher level. "Rain" by The Beatles was their first. There are many on Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour. The phrase "Paul is dead" is everywhere on these albums. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I've read a lot about the whole Page/Crowley relationship, and I believe he was a follower of his teachings. As far as the Stairway thing goes, I guess I never really cared to listen for backward masking in that song. I've never tried. I hear so many arguments back and forth about whether it's true or not, and of course Page nor the rest of the band has ever admitted to this at all. Plant says, "Yeah well we were all high on Morroccan dope at the time, so who knows."
Although Page did go so far as to have this etched into the first pressings of the Zeppelin III album: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." Very detailed link about Crowley's beliefs: http://www.luckymojo.com/...owley.html Just had to post an "evil" Jimmy Page photo. Speaking of backward messages in songs, I'm still trying to figure out the song Prince is singing along with his guitar in Shelia E.'s "Shortberry Strawcake."

Electric Light Orchestra's Face The Music also contains one of the handful of intentional backwards messages. It says, " The music is reversible, But time is not...Turn Back ...Turn Back...." " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

Yeah. ELO has some other things on their earlier albums as well. A little "darker" in tone. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
