Kano may have been a white group, but I don't ever remember hearing "I'm Ready" on white radio though so I never considered them pop, or George Kranz either.

I definately remember those days. Black radio also used to play:

Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
Passion - Rod Stewart
Talking In Your Sleep - The Romantics
Girls Just Want To Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper

I remember when WBLS in NYC would play Don't Wanna Fall In Love by Jane Child and Keep It Together by Madonna.

I remember an extended mix of Culture Club's Miss Me Blind and It's a Miracle getting played a lot on R&B radio when I was a kid. I actually came across that single mix several years ago, and I'm STILL kicking myself for not picking it up.

That's cuz that's the only black radio in Minneapolis! Wait, is Solid Gold Soul still on the AM dial?

WBLS (NYC) was good for this.

I heard Kiss's "I Was Made to Love You" and The Who's "Eminence Front" (just to name a couple) on urban contemporary radio. Just can't remember if it was (Frankie Crocker rockin' it on) 'BLS or (Jerry Bledsoe) on WWRL.

Frankie Crocker is the reason I bought Emancipation in '96. On the radio he said Prince was doing all his own music again, and it sounded good.

There's a cd called "Culture Club Remixed" and that song is on there... It's like 9 minutes or so. The cd used to be readily available at Virgin Megastore. It's got a bunch of b-sides and a few other nice rarities on it (and if memory serves, it was only 10 bux when I got it... though that was about 5 yrs. ago)

A lot of these songs I thought were by black artist. Just recently learned that Devo, Kraftwerk were not black. But I never heard these songs on white radio, so to me, they are honorary black like Lady T.

You must be very young. Back in the day, Devo's "Whip It" video was all over MTV so everyone back then knew what they looked like.

I am 38, Didn't watch MTV because they didn't play black videos except LRC, and MJ videos. Got pretty boring to me. THANK GOD when VH1 came out. And we just about died and went to heaven when BET finally came to our cable. I finally found out what the Bar Kays looked like performing.

Is that a satellite program? If it is, we used to have it on AM during the 1990s. That was the main broadcast I used to listen to in the mid to late 1990s. The radio station down here finally turned it into a black gospel station.

And I remember these white/Hispanic dance artists that got played on R&B radio:

Cathy Dennis - Too Many Walls
Tara Kemp - Just Wanna Hold You Tight
Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait
Taylor Dayne - Tell It To My Heart
Taylor Dayne - Prove Your Love
Taylor Dayne - I'll Always Love You
Taylor Dayne - Love Will Lead You Back

My first time seeing them perform was on "Soul Train". They are my third favorite artists of all time. You ain't seen nothing till you see them live in concert with the boa constrictor and putting the snake's head in his mouth and waving the snake between his legs. Larry also snaps his fingers and fire shoots out. They are wild as hell!

Yes. It was fun listening to the radio back then. You could also hear older songs from the 70's mixed in with the current hits (pop or R&B)

Ahhh the good ole days when radio programmers had the stones to be different.
