Similar thing. I was 8 as well. 8 was the year I got into pretty much all of the "heavy shit, flashy shit, KISS, P-Funk, Bowie, Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc. Parliament/Funkadelic was deep on so many different levels. George was a fucking genius, man, cuz he was hip to black rock (Hendrix, Sly) and glitter (Bolan, Bowie) but he was also hip to the ghetto's (War, Mayfield, Innervisions, Marvin) and he put this cryptic ass, junkiefied, staggering down the street shit on top of black rock. That's what scared everybody. Cuz it had that spiritual vibe, gospell backed vocals and that made that shit real. That's what made it deep. George in the 70's could have ran for motherfucking president and HAD all the black votes in the country. u believe it.

Yeah...I mean, look at the lyrics of Cosmic Slop---who else was writing songs like that, and with a funk/rock backdrop? Funkadelic dealt with it all-- the Social thang, the Spiritual thang, the Spaced-out, psychedelic thang... all at the same time...

nod Yep!!!
Funk can do airthang!!!!
Can sit for hours & never grow sour.....GOOD GAWD!!!!

I mentioned in the 'March To The Witch's Castle' thread' that I was pretty young, about 7 or eight, so, while I liked the music, I thought they were pretty scary(Still do!, LOl!!), at that age, I just wasn't ready for most of the shit they were dealing with conceptually--I remember being at an older cousin's house and seeing the cover for 'America Eats Its Young:

Well seeing the Stature of Liberty eating the little babies is scary for a kid.
I did not get into Funkadelic until I was about 18 or so. I knew more about Parliment went I was a little kid. I use to think the cartoons on the Aqua Boogie Album were great and use to play with the pop up pieces.

...

My favorite album covers by P-Funk were The Motor booty! Affair and the Mothership Connection. Shit, I really used to get a kick out of the record sleevs and reading those crazy illustrations.

It was 3 album covers that blew my little kid mind. "Let's Take It To The Stage" which was lifted from a scene in The Exorcist. The cover of the P-Funk Earth Tour with George in that long white fur coat and white wig, and my favorite, "The Clones of Dr. Funkenstien". George is basically doing Kiss. Paul Stanley to be specific. That's why he's pouting. Even on the backside, there's a dude who has his tongue stuck out (Gene Simmons). As a kid, I thought they were on this cover being a "black KISS". 1976 was a HUGE year for KISS, and they were both signed to Casablanca.

Advice please. Big fan of Funkadelic here, no so much of Parliament.
Which of the early Parliament albums are closest in sound/style to Funkadelic?
I know about Osmium. Any others?

The first time I heard Funkadelic, it wasn't even by Funkadelic...
It was the Jackson 5's version of "I Bet You" off their "ABC' album.....
Note: It was originally recorded by Theresa Lindsey....Very Motown-ish..
She's a co-writer ....
Anyway, I heard Johnnie Taylor's "Testify" before the I heard Parliament/or The Parliament's version....
It was around the Mothership/Tales Of Kidd Funkadelic period, that I found the funk.....

headbang I promise to funk,
Promise to keep its promise to keep the funk!!!!!
