I just picked up a greatest hits for Funkadelic. "Motor City Madness"
I really think George was a decade a head of himself with Funkadelic.

What do you think ?

I have the orignal records on cassette but, I decided to get this complation because I find a little to much filler on the frist two records and I wanted to put some songs on a mini-disc quickly.

I think it is a great complation for anyone who wants to get into this band.

To those out there who have little knowledge of Funkadelic, start your experience with Funkadelic buy purchasing and listening to Funkadelic albums/cds in the order in which they were released(oldest-latest). It is only in this way will you be able to truly appreciate the changes that Funkadelic went through. It is true that Funkadelic was way ahead of their time, when you compare them to other bands in the same timeframe. I was blessed to have witness seeing Funkadelic live in the very early stage (1972-1976). Yes they were incredibly outrageous, but they were also tight as a band back then before the gimmicks took center stage.

I said some of the cuts on the earlier CD's are filler. I did not say all. Any how this compliation does have a really good booklet with some early photos and some pictures of promotional pictures that appeared in Billboard.

In 1972 I was in 10th grade and had been playing guitar for about 3 years now, most of the music that I had attracted to was rock because of the dominance of the guitars, but it lacked the bottom end of funk which was where my heart was at. My brother-in-law was a drummer in a local band in philly who opened my ears to "Iron Butterfly", "Janis Joplin", and finally the almighty "Hendrix", it was he who turned me on to Funkadelic. When I first heard Funkadelic it was love and envy all at once. It was as if they had heard the music deep in my heart and jacked me. Funkadelic was the best of all the music I had been listening to all rolled up in one band. From that point on it was Funkadelic and only Funkadelic that entered my ears. So now you know why when people speak of Funkadelic I take this personally. First KNOW Funkadelic music, not the cartoon music hits that George Clinton later put out. Funkadelic music w/eddie hazel is the purist funk you will ever listen to.

Just because Parliament didn't rock as hard and had a seemingly more inane concept behind them doesn't mean they were any less of a band. Parliament made some of the greatest party music of all time and their lyrics and conceptual mythology were part of an anti-establishment allegory that was far more intelligent and frightening in many ways than people realize.

In the later years George got "big headed" self centered and took musical expression away from the musicians that made Funkadelic Funkadelic. Early Funkadelic songs had some serious vocals (lead and background), it was only in the later years that Funkadelic songs became a joke when George started enjoying the sound of his own voice. It was then at this time that Funkadelic lost it's original sound due to the "ever rotating" roster of musicians in P-Funk camp. My advise to you "Jack" would be to go back and truly listento early Funkadelic then write back.

As well as "Osmium" from Parliament (1970)

Also u need to REALLY check out both of Ruth Copeland's albums. "Self Portrait" from 69 and "I Am What I Am" from 71. Funkadelic is Ruth's back up band on those albums. In my opinion, this was some of Eddie Hazel's best playing.
