"word up" by cameo....dissin' "kiss" by prince?

hey ya'll!

i just heard "word up" by cameo and i wondered this for awhile....

is this song dissin' "kiss" by prince & the revolution?

don't get me wrong!.cameo got some funk on 'em now (i had their best of "12" on c.d.the "12" of back and forth was my fave)

this is why i say it was a diss:

when larry blackmon sings the second verse in the video, he's a wearing a outfit that's a TOTAL RIPOFF of the outfit that prince wore in the kiss video.

and the line...

"we don't have no time for psychological romance"

uh.last i heard "kiss" wasn't a psychological track. confused

and what was with the red codpeice he wore?. confuse disbelief

here's a quote that prince can use for himself(and mean it):(in reference to cameo)

"your best s*** couldn't f*** with my demos" lol

or..is it just me?

I'm a lifelong fan of Cameo. I was there on Cameo's first lp. Same thing with Prince. I was there from the get go. I don't see in the song where Larry is even thinking about P. The clothes either. U must understand, P doesn't own flamboyance. Now, I could see if he came out wearing ruffles and a coat (Hendrix) in the video (like Rick ended up doing) and trying to do the splits and shit, then yeah. I don't think Cameo or Larry ever thought twice about Prince. Cameo was in the game and getting off while P was still trying to figure out how he was going to wear his hair.

confuse I think it's just you. Because he's wearing a "total ripoff" of a Prince outfit and says "we don't have the time for psychological romance," it's a diss on Prince? I don't get it.

I wonder if that song from Snow White is meant to be a tribute to the funkiness of the Purple One's manjuice? hmmm

The splits was James's thing long before Prince could walk. Even Ron Isley used to do the splits. Sam Cooke...Little Richard...Little Anthony and the Imperials...I could go on.

[color=blue]That's bullshit if I've ever read it. I guess somebody never heard "Knights By Nights". As far as funk goes, Prince was never as funky as Cameo. And before Cameo thinned out in the late 80s, they were one of the baddest funk bands around. I still say Prince's falsetto can't even begin to touch the late Wayne Cooper's. The horn arrangements were monsterous, and Prince had to have respect for Cameo, since he used their ex drummer John Blackwell for so long.

Its like, uh...Prince dot org...DUH! Don't you like, even know where you're posting? We like totally need new mods...fer sure! wink

I never remember evem remotely hearing a P reference in that song. The song was directed at "sucker djs and MCs."

Now that James Brown song that Full Force produced around that time . . . THAT clearly had a P reference in it. That song dissed an artist who stole James' moves and his style who "thought he was God."

Coulda been either P or MJ.

Now that boy was badd with a double "d". His falsetto on "We're Going Out Tonight" is absolutely great.

Hmmm, I didn't know that all these other people used to do the splits in their repetoire, not that I was ignorant enough to assume that JB invented the splits as a dance move. Is there any footage out of that? I'd especially be interested in seeing Little Richard or Sam Cooke do them cuz they don't really seem to be "split" types (well little richard kinda does but I always envision him piano pounding rather than dancing).

I don't happen to keep footage from the 60s laying around, but if you watch enough documentaries, you can find them yourself.
