iPod playlists I was just wondering how how everyone else categorized music on their little white jukeboxes. I break up the library by decade, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s. Then there's 80s funk/r&b, dance, hip-hop, reggae, favorite remixes, Bond themes (love 007) and oldies (anything from the 20s to the 60s).

not really.....I'm too lazy for that! I play my iPod in shuffle-mode most of the time....this way I keep rediscovering the music I have!

I break my music up into two.
1. Shit I have to categorise to fit the I pod. 2. Good music software that lets me do what I want. .

I just got one of these as a gift from my brother and I'm uploading some music to it as I type this. I don't know how I'll organize it yet.

this is what i do - it's like finally having a radio station i can stand to listen to again! i think i'm gonna separate my 'mellow' music from the rest, though...nothing worse than rocking out to some ramones and joan jett and then, pow, all of a sudden i get hit with some alice coltrane or something!

I'm thinking I might have to get a whole 'nother iPod. This first one for all my collection-y favorites and then a second one for current listens and things I'm discovering, etc.

I just got mine a few days ago, but I can tell that just with my favorite artists, I'm gonna have the thing full. And that's only like 20-25 acts. I've got a 40G one also, but I think I might need another one just for lesser faves and new stuff. Or I guess I could still use cd's.

That's why I stick to playlists that fit different moods. No big surprises. Having Purple Rain pop up during a workout is out of the question.

Or I guess I could still use cd's. i dunno, you might be surprised! i have just obscene amounts of prince and bowie stuff on mine, and i wasn't at all modest with all the other artists i've collected over the years...so far i'm at around 5,500 songs and i have room for as many as i've loaded so far. of course, i was careful not to load duplicate songs, and there's a whole lot from my collection i didn't load, just because i couldn't see myself wanting to hear it on the way to work or wherevs. so are you totally addicted to loading as much music into it as you can cram into a day?

so are you totally addicted to loading as much music into it as you can cram into a day? Yes, I'm totally an uploading fool. It's hella fun. I can only be torn away from the computer for pesky things like sleep and meals. Other than that, it's all I've been doing. I just take it one artist at a time and put on everything from hard copy cd. I'll make my way to MP3's, cd-r's, etc. later. But just as an example, I'm already at about 1.5 G's just with Prince albums. And that's not even starting in on singles, 12" versions and rare stuff. Of course, I have more of Prince and Bowie than anyone else, but just with those 2 artists alone, I might fill up a third of the thing. Oh, and when you first got yours, did it say you only had like 37G to work with? Mine did. I wonder what those extra 3G are tied up in.

What Apple doesn't tell you is that the number of gigabytes on the box is the total capacity of the unit. A gig or 2 is needed for internal software required to run the iPod.

I wonder what those extra 3G are tied up in. well, i have a zen nomad instaead of an iPod, and it's been saying all along i have something like 38.8G to work with. i haven't decided how much prince stuff i'm gonna put in my player outside of the officially released stuff...i haven't loaded too many 12" singles into it, other than ones i really really like and have on commercially-released CD singles. at this point, i'm just gonna enjoy all i loaded into it so far, and if i get the itch for something i don't have loaded, i'll do it on a case-by-case basis. but yeah, loading all that music into a little deck of cards felt really, really good.

I started out with 37.14. I thought maybe it was taken up with sample photos or mp3's. Hadn't sussed around enough to find out what was eating up the space. Thanks for the info.

I know. Wow. I was resistant to the idea at first. I'm always wary of new technology and then just throw myself into it. I can definitely understand the appeal. I feel like I'll always prefer cd-r's though with their limits and having to figure out a tracklist and whatnot.

Themes, usually. Songs that make me think about eras, or ideas, or people. Mixes that I make for friends, etc.
