Who wants a "ghetto pass"?

Yes, I was watching VH1's Race-o-rama and first off I think it's dispicable. They have black people commenting on racial stereotypes pertaining to black culture. They were talking about certain artist that get a ghetto pass for keeping it real and not trying to be black. First off, who the hell wants a ghetto pass? I sure don't. Anyway, who in your opinion gets a ghetto pass? i think it should be....

I don't think he was. Strange considering he's always on those things.....so, can you think of anyone who deserves a ghetto pass?

I don't know what the "Ghetto Pass" is. Black people don't run the Ghetto, so how is anyone giving out passes.

There's nothing I strive for more in life than credibility in a world where people are opressed, deprived and in poverty. I know I'm taking a literal interpretation of the word "ghetto," but come on! How many different terms do we need for street credibility, blue-eyed soul, etc?

i dont know about y'all, but i thought that show was hella funny.

Especially funny was the part about the white men in the ghetto list, which included

-The hamburger helper man

-The michelin man (who was later refuted because there are no cars in the ghetto)

-The pillsbury Dougboy

- The dutchmasters

Y'all got to just relax sometimes and look forward to a laugh.

i hear you loud and clear. that's why i said i don't want one. who the hell wants to live in the ghetto? is that some kind of an aspiration for some people? if that makes me a sellout then so be it. by the way, if you're black does that mean you're born with a ghetto pass, or can ou still apply? biggrin

I KNEW there was something on TV this week that I HAD to watch!!!

This sounds like that Ego' Trips special. And this sounds like the stuff in their "Big Book of Racism." I've mentioned this book a few times. When I was reading it I said: "Oh, no they didn't!" and "Oh, snap!" a lot! But, I laughed my ass off, too a lot.

They're a multi-culti bunch; they dish it and take it. And honestly, some of this stuff you have to take with a grain of salt.

...and what do you think of that statement? i also read an interview with her in a magazine not too long ago and she said she was speaking as a black woman. i wasn't offended by that but thought it was a bit odd. at least someone wants to be black though. lord knows most black people don't want to be. it's like what we were saying last time about black people talking about all of the different things they're mixed with in order to be less black. by the way, don't you love the white comentators on race-o-rama telling us what it's like to be black? i think that's hilarious.

I saw bits and pieces of that shit on VH1. I thought it was the most stupid, rediculous mess I've seen in a while.

They act like hip hop rules the entire black race and that all black people listen to it, dress like it, and live it. Not all black people are ghetto and not all black music is ghetto. Many black people hate hip hop and don't want to be associated with it in any shape, form, or fashion. They fail to realize that hip hop did not always dominate the damned music scene. It may feel like it has because it's been on top for so long, but it hasn't.

It was fine to list Eminem as ghetto because he is just as stupid and ignorant as these hip hoppers, but to list Teena Marie and Hall & Oates is fucking rediculous. They were making black music long before this hip hop bullshit and language took over. Teena Marie and Hall & Oates deserve a "black pass", not a fucking "ghetto pass".

VH1 is owned by MTV, which was accused of being racist in the 1980s. Have they changed....no! They've gone from not playing black music to exploiting it.

Britney nope, nope, and heck nope!Justin not after he sold Janet (decent lp tho)
Tina Marie she has a permanent pass!
Xtina nope!
Jon B I like some of his stuff, but Lewis Taylor make him look like a wannabe
Pink nope

But reasonable minds can disagree!

My fantasy list for "black passes" (musicians only):

Dave Brubeck
Bill Evans
Michael McDonald
Lewis Taylor
Bobby Caldwell
The Revolution
3rd Bass (I said it)
AWB
Remy Shand
Eminem

there's bound to be more . . .

the Ego Trip show is getting rancid reviews, but I enjoyed the book!

you summed everything up that i was thinking! you're absolutely right about all black people liking hip hop. i sure as hell don't see myself as a hip hopper nor do i see myself as ghetto. we are all not from the ghetto. i just hate all the stereotypes that they talked about. like black women rolling their necks and stuff like that. it's so stupid. do they think that's what it means to be black? you're also right about the difference between a black pass and ghetto pass. teena marie and hall & oates as you've mentioned deserve black passes not ghetto passes. leave that for eminem, justin and xtina!

Cuba Gooding's Ghetto Pass got "revoked." So I guess anything is possible and being black by birth isn't a guarantee. rolleyes I've been watching it, and even though it's meant to be funny, I can't help but to think that somebody will be watching it and compare whether or not they are not "ghetto," (which is now synonymous with being black) enough because they may not carry themselves a certain way. Then somebody else may feel that they are trying too hard to be black because they listen to hip hop and imitate a style of dress or lingo.

Yeah, I think it's weird. Don't get me wrong I love Teena Marie but, like I said before you can't pick you're color. Now, she may relate better to black people because of the environment she was brought up in but, to go on and declare that she is a black woman is pretty over the top.

And? Would you discount him for his age?

Jazz "considered" to be black? Astounding!

You didn't mean to say such things. Did you?

Brubeck's a jazz legend in his own right, and because he was a pioneer in bringing integrated bands into wide acceptance. Time Out and Red, Hot and Cool are enough to give him props. Surely you realize this.

Who would you list ahead of Brubeck?
