Well, since u can't relate to "what I'm talking about", then check out the posts by others who have seen the movie.

i have, and the only way i can "relate" is to actually watch the movie myself. yeesh no need to take "what your talking about" so damn personal...

'Saturday Night Fever' is a masterpiece of a movie. It's a powerful story, great acting, with a soundtrack to die for.But it's kinda sad and depressing too.At the time,it was promoted as an "urban tragedy" and that's exactly what it is.It's a very gritty, racy and provocative film where disco dancing is portrayed as an "escape" from the pain and disappointment of everyday reality. If you like this film, you gotta get the DVD that came out several years ago.It contains three deleted scenes, commentary and the picture quality is breathtaking.Get rid of your old VHS copy and get the DVD!

'Thank God It's Friday' is a lighthearted look at the whole disco era. There are alot of good things about this film....Donna Summer as "Nicole",a cameo by The Commodores and a few genuinely funny scenes. But this film is flawed in many ways.Alot of the humor just doesn't work, and it's incredibly cheesy. But I enjoy it as a fun "souvenir" of a magical era.The soundtrack has a few gems ("Last Dance"..."Trapped In A Staircase"..."Leatherman's Theme"..."Do You Want The Real Thing"),but it's not nearly as impressive as the 'SNF' soundtrack.Such as shame that it's not on DVD yet.My old VHS copy needs an upgrade.

"Fever"is this raw, vulgar, and gritty movie with a disco soundtrack.Great film.Travolta didn't get more credit for his acting because people thought he was portraying an R rated Vinnie Barbarino. Before I wanted to be Prince I wanted to be Tony.

As I mentioned above, the 'TGIF' soundtrack has several gems on it.But there are also a few duds. Some songs simply go on too long, becoming monotonous really quick. As someone pointed out,Diana Ross' song ("Lovin,Livin,Givin") is a complete rip-off of the Giorgio Moroder/Donna Summer sound. The real gem on this album (besides "Last Dance") is the Paul Jabara number "Trapped In A Stairway",which is a perfect little pop/disco track.Despite it's unusual subject matter,I really think this song could have been a huge hit single.I also love LaRue's "Do You Want The Real Thing",a slow, intoxicating jam that grabs you and never lets go.Interestingly, the track "Take It To The Zoo" was co-written by Donna Summer and performed by her background singers, made up of two of her sisters and a cousin. They actually completed an entire debut album titled 'Watchin Daddy Dance',but it was never released. It remains locked in the Casablanca vault, but Donna reclaimed one track ("Maybe It's Over") for her 1984 album 'Cats Without Claws'.

"Trapped In A Stairway" should have been a single, definately. I've always dug that song.

nod I love that song

"this could only happen to me...if only I'd been able to see
I wouldn't be here,alone,away from you"

one of the "lost" disco classics of the era!

Though a lot of people really like it, I am not a huge fan of Saturday Night Fever. I don't think it's aged well at all, and in a way I think it cheapened (i.e., straightened) disco for the masses. Don't get me wrong, the soundtrack is good, but it changed disco for the worse.

Thank God It's Friday is a big mess of a movie, and it's all the better for it! How on earth did they manage to cram so much awful shit into one movie? It's beyond me. With rare exception, the soundtrack is a lot of fun. The downside is that Diana Ross sort of proved all the critics right when she did the bad Donna Summer rip off Lovin', Livin' and Givin'.

I feel you about Saturday Night Fever. I dig the movie. I'll be the first to say it's a classic. The effect it had on society was deep. No doubt about that. And the music is fantastic. BUT, overtime, whenever I watch the movie (yes I have the VHS and DVD) it't s somewhat of a bummer to me. The movie is somewhat depressing. At the time when it came out, it was on target. Very realistic. Which is what I love about the film. But, I definately have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this movie. Now, Thank God It's Friday, I can be in any mood and STILL enjoy this film. It's much more fun to watch.

I agree with you,'Saturday Night Fever' is a sad movie, really depressing. We probably should have known what to expect after hearing the theme song "Staying Alive"...

"life going nowhere, somebody help me...somebody help me yeah"

'TGIF' gives you a more "fun" version of the disco era and what it was like.

You know what I've noticed? There is actually an entire Donna Summer album buried inside the 'TGIF' soundtrack! If you took her contributions to the film and the soundtrack, they could have easily released a solo Donna Summer album in 1978.Let's call it 'Last Dance' and this is what it could have looked like...

DONNA SUMMER---LAST DANCE

SIDE 1---
"Je' Taime (Moi Non Plus) (15:47)

SIDE 2---
"Last Dance" (8:08)
"With Your Love" (6:06)--the rare extended version that appears on 'The Dance Collection'
"Love To Love You Baby" (single version)
"Last Dance" (reprise) 3:20

the song "Love To Love You Baby" appears briefly in the film,so that's why I included it on this project.

when you guys watch 'TGIF',have you ever noticed that there are MANY songs that appear in the film, but are not included on the soundtrack? I mean, there are enough songs to be make another soundtrack,lol...

"It's Serious" by Cameo
"Let's Make A Deal" by G.C. Cameron and Syreeta
"Easy" by the Commodores
"You're The Reason I Feel Like Dancing" by Fifth Dimension
"From Here To Eternity" by Giorgio Moroder
"Romeo and Juliet" by Alec R. Costandinos
"Dance All Night" by Cuba Gooding
"I'm Here Again" by Thelma Houston
"You Can Always Tell A Lady By The Company She Keeps" by D.C. LaRue
"Love To Love You Baby" by Donna Summer
"Hollywood" by Village People
"I Am What I Am" by Village People

if they had gotten rid of the bonus 12" that came with the soundtrack (Donna Summer's "JeTaime Moi Non Plus",not one of her better songs),they probably could have fit all those songs on a third record, making it a massive 3-LP set.

Some more opinions and observations on 'TGIF'...

***I don't like the version of "Last Dance" that Donna sings in the movie. It sounds like a hastily arranged rough demo, without all the "polish" and power of the album version. The song was recorded in the summer of 1977,and filming began soon thereafter. So maybe that's why it sounds rushed?

***when are they gonna release this film on DVD?? I have an old VHS copy that was released in 1989.It's by a company called Good Time video. The picture quality is atrocious and the sound is even worse. If they can put those crappy "Breakin" movies on DVD,then they should be able to do the same for 'TGIF'.

several of the actors in 'TGIF' later went on to greater fame in the 80s...

***Terri Nunn became the lead singer of the band Berlin ("Take My Breath Away")

***Jeff Goldblum became a respected actor with several hit films ("The Fly")

***Debra Winger went on to co-star with John Travolta in "Urban Cowboy".

***sadly, actor Ray Vitte (who plays DJ "Bobby Speed") died in 1983.

***Paul Jabara, who wrote "Last Dance" and appears in the film as a nerd, died in 1992.

and now,for some more observations about 'SNF'...

***In 1977,my vinyl copy of the soundtrack featured the live version of "Jive Talkin" by the Bee Gees. But in the CD era, they use the original studio version. It's not a big deal, but I always wondered why they made this change.

***there are several songs that appear in the film, but are not on the soundtrack album...

"Disco Duck" by Rick Dees
"Dr. Disco" by Rick Dees
"Barracuda Hangout" by David Shire

***Unlike with 'TGIF' though, every song in the movie is the exact same version that appears on the soundtrack album.Filming began in March 1977 and it's obvious that all the "new" songs were completed by then. The rest of the album is made up of previously released songs, most from 1976.

Considering how prolific Donna was in the 70s (often releasing two albums a year),it wouldn't have been unusual for her to release a studio album in the summer of 1978 containing her 'TGIF' songs. She still could have released 'Live And More' in the fall. The only downfall? The 'TGIF' soundtrack would have suffered without her songs, lol.Right Donna??

One difference about the two films are the settings and the attitudes. Los Angeles and New York. At that time, 77 and 78, N.Y. and L.A. were THE places to be. And they couldn't have been more different. That shows up bigtime in those two films. "Thank God It's Friday" is one of my favorite films for so many different reasons. I remember the title song, hearing it on the radio. Going to see this in Westwood, Ca. The place was packed. Knowing where the club that they used was. Donna Summer, who I had a mad crush on. The Commodores. The dj. The cat that had the musical equipment in the van. Who both actors were in another one of my favorite movies "Car Wash". It was just funny, chessy and very fun to watch. It's a feel good movie to me, that's all. And it captured a very magical time in So. California. The Odyssey was a real dance club that I used to go to when I was in high school. (Had to be over 17 to enter, but wasn't allowed to drink). The place ended up burning down.

nod Agreed. Eventhough the plot sucked bigtime, I think that it was time period and mystique behind the movie that carried and the kickass soundtrack.

Yeah, but your vinyl copy was not one of the early pressings (1977),was it? You said that you didn't get into the Bee Gees until the 80s.Is that when you first purchased 'SNF' on vinyl?

well, all I know is,my vinyl copy (which my mother bought in Decemeber 1977) contains the live version hmph!

Yeah, I dunno why they would've included a live version in the first place.

Do you know if it's the same version as on their Here At Last... Live! album from '77?

But,there is a breakdown during the third chorus, and Barry encourages audience participation...."Come on!" he insists. Is this that same version from 'Here at Last'?

Sounds like the same version, but for all we know it could've been performed like that at any number of gigs. shrug

I listen to that SNF soundtrack at least once a month and I watch the DVD at least once a month also. It's one of my favorite movie/sountrack combos, Purple Rain and Juice being the others. I like dramas so SNF get's the nod over TGIF every time for me.
