In my mind, both are great films about great music and great periods. There are other films centered around Disco, but none come close to these two. So which one are you? Saturday Night Fever or Thank God It's Friday? Me, I'm all about Thank God It's Friday.

i actually cant stand Saturday Night Fever...I've just never been a fan of John Travoltas.....

Though a lot of people really like it, I am not a huge fan of Saturday Night Fever. I don't think it's aged well at all, and in a way I think it cheapened (i.e., straightened) disco for the masses. Don't get me wrong, the soundtrack is good, but it changed disco for the worse.

Thank God It's Friday is a big mess of a movie, and it's all the better for it! How on earth did they manage to cram so much awful shit into one movie? It's beyond me. With rare exception, the soundtrack is a lot of fun. The downside is that Diana Ross sort of proved all the critics right when she did the bad Donna Summer rip off Lovin', Livin' and Givin'.

SNF is a great film. however, i can't sit through either of these movies, or many movies made around that time. everyone/everything looks so dirty.

Of course, the plot in all disco films suck big fucking time. But, TGIF has a kickass soundtrack with Donna Summers and the Commondors just to name a few. Shit, you can't got wrong.

I prefer "Saturday Night Fever" by far. The music from "Thank God It's Friday" is good but the movie reminds me of a disco version of "The Love Boat".

'Saturday Night Fever' is a masterpiece of a movie.It's a powerful story,great acting,with a soundtrack to die for.But it's kinda sad and depressing too.At the time,it was promoted as an "urban tragedy" and that's exactly what it is.It's a very gritty,racy and provocative film where disco dancing is portrayed as an "escape" from the pain and disappointment of everyday reality.If you like this film,you gotta get the DVD that came out several years ago.It contains three deleted scenes,commentary and the picture quality is breathtaking.Get rid of your old VHS copy and get the DVD!

'Thank God It's Friday' is a lighthearted look at the whole disco era.There are alot of good things about this film....Donna Summer as "Nicole",a cameo by The Commodores and a few genuinely funny scenes.But this film is flawed in many ways.Alot of the humor just doesn't work,and it's incredibly cheesy.But I enjoy it as a fun "souvenir" of a magical era.The soundtrack has a few gems ("Last Dance"..."Trapped In A Staircase"..."Leatherman's Theme"..."Do You Want The Real Thing"),but it's not nearly as impressive as the 'SNF' soundtrack.Such as shame that it's not on DVD yet.My old VHS copy needs an upgrade.

I just bought my first DVD player a few months ago. At that time, I bought the "Saturday Night Fever" DVD, along with "Boogie Nights" and the "Purple Rain" 20th Anniversary 2 DVD set. I never knew about the extra features on DVDs such as the director's comments and deleted scenes or I would have bought a DVD player a long time ago. You are right about the quality of "Saturday Night Fever", I also have my DVD player plugged into my stereo and the music really thumps as crystal clear as a CD.

Yeah, that's the one I got. This one had two different commentaries. One of them had some very "interesting" facts about the last scene.

That's my favorite movie of the 1990s too and "What's Love Got To Do With It" would probably be next.

As I mentioned above,the 'TGIF' soundtrack has several gems on it.But there are also a few duds.Some songs simply go on too long,becoming monotonous really quick.As someone pointed out,Diana Ross' song ("Lovin,Livin,Givin") is a complete rip-off of the Giorgio Moroder/Donna Summer sound.The real gem on this album (besides "Last Dance") is the Paul Jabara number "Trapped In A Staircase",which is a perfect little pop/disco track.Despite it's unusual subject matter,I really think this song could have been a huge hit single.I also love LaRue's "Do You Want The Real Thing",a slow,intoxicating jam that grabs you and never lets go.Interestingly,the track "Take It To The Zoo" was co-written by Donna Summer and performed by her background singers,made up of two of her sisters and a cousin.They actually completed an entire debut album titled 'Watchin Daddy Dance',but it was never released.It remains locked in the Casablanca vault,but Donna reclaimed one track ("Maybe It's Over") for her 1984 album 'Cats Without Claws'.

Saturday Night Fever all the way! You can't even compare the two. SNF is a classic and Travolta will always be remembered for his dance moves and the Bee Gees will always get props for the great music.

I feel you about Saturday Night Fever. I dig the movie. I'll be the first to say it's a classic. The effect it had on society was deep. No doubt about that. And the music is fantastic. BUT, overtime, whenever I watch the movie (yes I have the VHS and DVD) it't s somewhat of a bummer to me. The movie is somewhat depressing. At the time when it came out, it was on target. Very realistic. Which is what I love about the film. But, I definately have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this movie. Now, Thank God It's Friday, I can be in any mood and STILL enjoy this film. One difference about the two films are the settings and the attitudes. Los Angeles and New York. At that time, 77 and 78, N.Y. and L.A. were THE places to be. And they couldn't have been more different. That shows up bigtime in those two films. "Thank God It's Friday" is one of my favorite films for so many different reasons. I remember the title song, hearing it on the radio. Going to see this in Westwood, Ca. The place was packed. Knowing where the club that they used was. Donna Summer, who I had a mad crush on. The Commodores. The dj. The cat that had the musical equipment in the van. Who both actors were in another one of my favorite movies "Car Wash". It was just funny, chessy and very fun to watch. It's a feel good movie to me, that's all. And it captured a very magical time in So. California. The Odyssey was a real dance club that I used to go to when I was in high school. (Had to be over 17 to enter, but wasn't allowed to drink). The place ended up burning down.
