I think it's ridiclious that people are picking apart songs written with a positive intent; glad another thread digressed into my chosen female entertainer writes less selfish AIDS songs than yours.

clapping

I don't even understand why the word selfish entered the equation...

If you can find it, This is Madness by The Last Poets feat. Pharoah Sanders is a devastating song about AIDS.

Part of looking down on somebody is referring to them as a victim. wink

I don't necessarily think the song is selfish, but it did come from a selfish place in her. She was tired of losing her friends. That sentiment I can definitely understand and don't begrudge her. Musically, I just think it's a boring, poorly constructed song.

i thought it was a beautiful song and was sung exceptionally well at the Girlie Show

the girlie show version puts to shame the album version...

I agree. It's the emotional highpoint of the Girlie Show....no props,no dancers, just Madonna singing an emotional song all alone.

Together Again, while not bitter, is every bit as selfish as In This Life (although it's probably a better song than ITF). Everything that goes on in the song revolves around the protagonist, ie: Janet.

nod

it's ridiculous to suggest that "In This Life" is a selfish song.

Rodney Crowell released a brilliant soul-searching album in 2001 called The Houston Kid that had two songs directly addressing HIV/AIDS, pretty amazing for a country artist. I Wish It Would Rain and Wandering Boy are the songs. Put either or both of those on there and skip the Madonna tune. She meant well, but eh.

Amazingly Madonna manged to seem utterly selfish when discussing a friend who died of AIDS. The song had an idiotic "WOE IS ME WHATEVER WILL I DO NOW?" tone.

and there goes VC's daily dose of Madonna bashing rolleyes

I totally agree
And the concept of dedicating a song to a friend who has died of AIDS makes that idea more silly

Is "Too much love will kill you" on Queen's last album Made from Heaven about AIDS? I don't know, download it and listen to it and judge for yourself.

No, it was originally a Brian May solo song, written around the time of the beginning of his relationship with Anita Dobson, whilst he was already married.

It's his way of saying "Man, being in love with two women is so painful". I would be interested to see how much sympathy his then wife had for his plight. nod

STFU, DavidEye, you know from experience that I'm a fan. If I don't like something she's done, I'll say it, though, and I'm sorry if it threatens you.

Oh,I know you're a fan.It just seems that, every other day, you're complaining about something she's done.I hear more negative comments than positive comments from you.Last year, you even went so far as to suggest that she should retire!

Well, sorry if you don't share my opinions - nothing I can do about that, right? I'm not one of her sycophants.

And suggesting she retire was not a negative comment - it was to protect her legacy, remember? I mean, since she started hooking up with Britney and Missy, etc., I think we have cause to worry. Even jayardee admits that he thought those were really poor decisions.

BUT, the Reinvention Tour changed my mind. She can still perform, so I hope she stays. I just don't want a repeat of the American Life period. lol

Yeah,I know I said I wouldn't come back here,but I couldn't resist lol

Every artist makes poor decisions.Janet has worked with "questionable" artists too....the gay-bashing Beenie Man (really smart, considering the number of gay Janet fans) and R.Kelly to name a few.She has also worked with Missy before,AND she appears on Chingy's latest flop CD disbelief

Do you also suggest that Janet should retire too?

But there's no need to panic. And Maddy doesn't really have to worry about "protecting" her legacy. Her legacy is already intact, regardless of what she does in the future. She has made her mark.

I just don't want her to bow out looking like a complete fool - I think associating herself so much with untalented Britney did her a huge amount of harm in 2003-2004. People now have an excuse to dismiss her as merely the original Britney, so to speak. And they have been doing so.

Janet jumped the shark with the Super Bowl. Now she will forever be known as wardrobe malfunction girl, past accomplishments be damned. That's her fault, and she has to take the consequences. Stupid, stupid decision.

A few things, though:

-Beenie Man made his anti-gay comments AFTER Janet cut that track with him
-Son Of A Gun was produced back when Missy was a hot property, now she just seems washed up (Gap commercials and reality TV...come on)
-the R. Kelly remix of Any Time, Any Place was also the single version, and made it a #2 hit; this is back when he was a good producer (1994)
-Yeah, the Chingy thing was fuckin' stupid. lol

I knew it was going to happen, so we might as well take a look at this photo of Madonna from the "Girlie Show" preforming "In This Life" (a standout performance that makes the song worthwhile).
