Rodney Crowell released a brilliant soul-searching album in 2001 called The Houston Kid that had two songs directly addressing HIV/AIDS, pretty amazing for a country artist. I Wish It Would Rain and Wandering Boy are the songs. Put either or both of those on there and skip the Madonna tune. She meant well, but eh.

Amazingly Madonna manged to seem utterly selfish when discussing a friend who died of AIDS. The song had an idiotic "WOE IS ME WHATEVER WILL I DO NOW?" tone.

That tone was set for the lack of care in society and look down at AIDS victims like monsters.

It doesn't have to be all happy like Together Again

Hardly selfish, Madonna has dedicated much of her career to AIDS awareness

Part of looking down on somebody is referring to them as a victim. wink

I don't necessarily think the song is selfish, but it did come from a selfish place in her. She was tired of losing her friends. That sentiment I can definitely understand and don't begrudge her. Musically, I just think it's a boring, poorly constructed song.

That's what I meant - it came from a selfish place in her. She came across as very petulant in that song, it's hard to explain, but maybe you know what I mean.

For many years I thought The Smashing Pumpkins's "Disarm" was about someone with HIV. Later on, in some commentary from Billy Corgan I heard, he explained what tha t song was actually about.

Pet Stop Boys have several. The most powerful are: Dreaming of the Queen, It Couldn't Happen Here, Being Boring (not just about AIDS, but that is a huge part of it), and Discoteca.

Is "Too much love will kill you" on Queen's last album Made from Heaven about AIDS? I don't know, download it and listen to it and judge for yourself.

Pet Shop Boys "Go West"?

I realize that it was written by (or at least for) the Villiage People first and was more about Califronia as a sancutary but I've read and agree that even though it's a campy disco song, it does somehow seem to reflect an attitude that AIDs can end in our lifetime, doesn't it...a lot like their cover of "Someday" as well.

Alot of people i know who survived the first wave of AIDS... the second is coming... seem to be selfish about that period because they lost soo many people. remember almost a whole generation of gay men was lost. many people lost over half their friends... i'm sure it was a rough time

Together Again, while not bitter, is every bit as selfish as In This Life (although it's probably a better song than ITF). Everything that goes on in the song revolves around the protagonist, ie: Janet.

I think it's ridiclious that people are picking apart songs written with a positive intent; glad another thread digressed into my chosen female entertainer writes less selfish AIDS songs than yours. confused
