You didn't mean to say such things. Did you? Brubeck's a jazz legend in his own right, and because he was a pioneer in bringing integrated bands into wide acceptance. Time Out and Red, Hot and Cool are enough to give him props. Surely you realize this. Who would you list ahead of Brubeck? [Edited 2/23/05 21:36pm] I think I understood things wrong.....

abierman said: I think I understood things wrong..... No problemo. I went off on a tangent myself. As to the actual question, EVERYBODY wants a ghetto pass. It's fashionable to fit the hip-hop stereotype. But when it becomes unfashionable, the tables will turn. When hip-hop heads like myself get tired of seeing what's being played on radio and TV, the general public definitely will. I saw Race-O-Rama last night. The book reads better than it plays on TV. You just can't talk issues of sex and race in the style of "I Love the 80's." The satire gets muddled. I don't think it was as bad as people are saying it was, but it was definitely carried off wrong. But here's what got me. The announcer was none other than Professor X, the leader of the now-defunct X-Clan and Blackwatch crews. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Britney nope, nope, and heck nope!Justin not after he sold Janet (decent lp tho) Tina Marie she has a permanent pass! Xtina nope! Jon B I like some of his stuff, but Lewis Taylor make him look like a wannabe Pink nope But reasonable minds can disagree! My fantasy list for "black passes" (musicians only): Dave Brubeck Bill Evans Michael McDonald Lewis Taylor Bobby Caldwell The Revolution 3rd Bass (I said it) AWB Remy Shand Eminem there's bound to be more . . . the Ego Trip show is getting rancid reviews, but I enjoyed the book! I was reading an issue of "Blender" with Janet on the cover and the story did say that manye people got upset with Justin and that he did offically lose his "ghetto pass" after that. I don't think he would have kept it anway...doing stupid "Einstein" and dating Cameron Diaz, the whitest latino/Native American/whatever she claims she is woman ever! That being said, I can understand why people find the term "ghetto pass" offensive.

The term sounds offensive, but it is used a lot within the black community to refer to black people. But the term "pass" or "black pass" has also been used, and they have less negative connotations. BTW, I lost a lot of respect for Justin after Janetbowl. He had gained a lot of acceptance for the quality of his work up until that point (heck, even before that, when N'Sync was getting on black radio on the QT). But you can't build a black audience when you sell out one of its biggest stars. People can disagree, but he shoulda accepted more of the heat for that. The irony is of course that if the black community really wanted to stand behind Janet, woudln't the album have been a bigger hit? I think the fact that the singles tanked on pop radio, which is 80 percent African American artists doing nearly the same kind of music that obiviously means that while the music is black, the programmers (and listeners) probably aren't!

Good points. I would only ask it to be remembered that Janet's been famous for a long time. The fact her last album sold 376 copies doesn't mean the black community doesn't support her overall. If Justin had sold out Chaka Khan like that, they'd have been just as mad, and Chaka hasn't sold many albums in the last 15 years (or has she? just using her as an example). You make a good point about radio programmers. Most of the big stations preselect their spins via computer these days, don't they? I heard a black radio station owner say one time that if the song wasn't on the computerized list, it didn't get played. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I'm not sure if 97.9, a very popular R&B/hip hop station is black owned or not, but even though they are Clear Channel, their setlist is a lot better and more diverse than pop radio. They play Amel's "For Real" a surprising amount of times. I don't even listen to that station or radio that often, but they got it right. They also spinned Janet a few times, so I could be wrong about Janet not getting African American support, but if she had more, I think the album would have, could have and should have been a bigger hit.

To me,Remy Shand's debut CD sounds more "soulful" than most of the crap that passes for R&B these days! He has a true understanding of black music....genuine soul music, not the watered-down,plastic stuff that routinely tops the charts. He's more deserving of a "black pass" than many of the black artists who are supposedly doing R&B these days (R.Kelly,Usher,etc). They had a special on the Harlem Globetrotters last night. Make no mistake, PBS is good at documentaries about black folk. At the same time, HBO is good for producing a steady stream of original programming showcasing talented black actors. Lackawanna Blues is only the latest example. If UPN or WB were smart they'd partner with HBO to produce network programming. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
