Underrated album of the 80's--Sheena Easton-The Lover in Me

No Deposit No Return
The Lover In Me
Follow My Rainbow
Without You
If It's Meant To Last
Days Like This
One Love
101
Cool Love
Fire And Rain

Prince, LA and Babyface, Angela Winbush teamed up to put out one bad-ass album, on par with GM's Faith as one of the best crossover albums of the 80's...the house remix of 101 is essential.

The Lover In Me makes US #2, #1 on US R&B charts, and UK #15.
LP The Lover In Me makes US #44 and UK #25.
Days Like This makes US R&B #36 and UK #43.
101, written by Prince, makes US R&B #2 and UK #54.

The Arms Of Orion, a duet with Prince, appears on the Batman soundtrack and makes US #36 and UK #12. Lyrics written by Sheena.

hey, a thread from a person who actually likes late 80's pop biggrin

I love "no deposit no return" and "the lover in me". I also dig "follow my rainbow".

I got the followup too "what comes naturally". The pics on the cd booklet are hot!

fire and rain is still one of the best angela winbush songs ever...i could imagine it being on stephaine mills' "Home" album, also AW produced.

other Sheena tidbits:
1985--She wins the Grammy ® Award for Best Mexican-American Performance for Me Gustas Tal Como Eres, a duet with Luis Miguel on the Todo Me Recuerda A Ti album. eek

Sugar Walls, written by Prince, under the pen name Alexander Nevermind, peaks at US #9 and #3 on the US R&B charts. Due to the controversy over the lyrics, the single is the most talked about single of her career. There is severe criticism from the Family Resource Center, a group lead by Tipper Gore, due to what they deemed sexually explicit in content. She and other artists defend their right of artistic expression and disagrees with the group's assessments of the lyrics. The heated discussions die down. razz
She is honored as the only artist in history to have Top 5 hits on Billboard's five major charts: Pop, R&B, Country, Adult Contemporary, and Dance. wink

I think this is one of the few albums I've owned at one time or another on cassette, vinyl and CD! It's a good - though dated - pop album, and Babyface & LA Reid are in top form on this one. The two Prince tunes are good, but not up to par with Sugar Walls.

Great album. I really like "No Deposit, No Return" and "The Lover In Me". "101" and "Cool Love" are nice songs too.

This is a superb album.Sheeena worked with all the right producers and they gave her a wonderful collection of songs.Prince's two contributions---the haunting "101" and the bright, sexy "Cool Love"---are top-notch,rivaling most of the songs that he was giving to his own proteges at this point. The LA and Babyface songs are also great, especially the title track and the fast,catchy,hook-filled "One Love",which really should have been a single.Angela Winbush gives Sheena a couple of beautiful soulful ballads, the best being "Fire and Rain".This is a perfect late-80s dance/R&B album, and I believe it was her most successful album ever.

WOW,I'm surprised that "101" reached Number Two on the R&B charts! For one thing,it's not really an R&B song at all,and I don't think I've ever heard it on the radio in my area.I saw the video one time,on BET though.

Do you guys remember the "Lover In Me" video? Sheena is sexy as hell in that little red number razz She then changes into a slinky black outfit.I needed a cold shower after watching that video, lol.

I always assumed it was a single? Definately strong enough.

"i'm not that kinda girl, u can let down and kick around" biggrin

Karyn white is on backing vox on that track and "lover in me".

Compare these 2 pics, on "the lover in me" pic she looks odd.

That second pic though she is FINE! Her scottish fans hated her for "sexing" herself up. Thank god she did.....

I'm pretty sure the singles were "The Lover In Me","Days Like This" and "101".But I could be wrong. It was probably a mistake to release "Days Like This" as a single. It's an okay song, but not nearly as strong or catchy as "One Love" or "No Deposit,No Return".

Interestingly,LA and Babyface "recycled" those same lyrics on Karyn White's song "Superwoman",which came out around the same time...

"I'm not the kinda girl that you can let down and think that everything's alright"

lol

In 1991,I almost bought her 'What Comes Naturally' album. How does it sound? Is it a worthy follow-up to 'The Lover In Me'? The only song I've ever heard was the first single (title track),but I know she released a second single called "You Can Swing It".I don't think it was very successful.
