Natalie Cole working on a new CD I've noticed that Natalie Cole posts regularly on the message boards at her official site. She recently posted the following message...
"Just wanted to let you know that a new CD is planned for the fall 2005.No title yet,but it will be pop classics injected with a little bit of a jazzy flavor and a whole lot of me.Dallas Austin will be doing 3 to 4 songs and another producer--or 2---will be doing the rest.To be determined.I will be using my own band and doing all my own backgrounds.Should be interesting.I will actually be involved with my management to do the marketing which is different and new for me!" I really love Natalie. She's one of my Top 5 female vocalists. But honestly,I'm not sure how I feel about this project."Pop classics"? She's been doing other people's songs for years now.I want an album of new songs for a change! Wouldn't it be cool if she could make another R&B album, like her 70s masterpieces? Mind you,not an album that sounds like today's lame R&B,but a return to her soulful 70s heyday.Remember songs like "I've Got Love On My Mind" and "Our Love"? That's what I'm dying to hear from her! I know she primarily likes to do jazz, which is fine, but I really miss hearing her sing R&B,and I miss hearing her sing NEW songs,as opposed to remakes.Instead of Dallas Austin,I'd rather she go into the studio with some "old school" producers,to try to bring back the old magic. Her 1999 album 'Snowfall On The Sahara' was an attempt to do this, but I know she can do better. Anybody agree? [Edited 2/23/05 6:12am]

She hasn't done anything worthwhile in a long, long time.

Her last CD 'Ask A Woman Who Knows' is a pleasant listen, but it's really just the same formula she's been following throughout the 90s...old pop and jazz standards.Well-done,but totally predictable and sometimes...boring.

I'd like to see her do some gritty R&B,something along the lines of Chaka Khan's 'Come 2 My House' CD.
(wondering if I should hide in a box after making that statement, lol)

I'll buy it cause i support her as an artist, same reason i bought Norah Jones C.D.s
but their both a Horrible Snoozefest I don't know but not many modern, female vocalist can pull off the old Jazz Standard, it just turns out unbelievably boring, The Song writing is always lackluster, always imatating old ones, or sometimes theirs no song writing at all and just Covers... my theory is Imatating old singers will never get too many listeners, because well, they can always by an old singers C.D. instead of yours In the jazz Realm Innovation is really slow, all they do is mix Pop with Jazz Boring... Somebody needs to mix Jazz with electronika... im sure that'll open some ears...

Why is Dallas Austin the only producer worth naming in her post?

Her 70s work is just superb."I've Got Love On My Mind" is one of the best soul songs of the 70s.She even got a little funky at times,on songs like "Thankful" and "Sophisticated Lady".
