Interesting point concerning musicianship. It's not so easy: Charlie Watts vs. Ringo on drums George vs. Mick Taylor on lead guitar Keef vs. John on rhythm guitar Paul vs. anyone on various instruments Brian Jones vs. anyone on various instruments Well, that puts that argument to rest. I've gotta say that the Stones win hands down on musicianship. They get a bad rep, because they play sloppily, but I still think any member of the Stones could outplay any member of the Beatles on his respective instrument. And let's go John vs. Mick on harmonica. "Love Me Do" was nice and all, but I don't think he could hang with Mick on the live version of "Midnight Rambler" or "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'". It's a jungle out there.

I think the "Black and Blue" album on whole is pretty funky. The grooves in that album are just killer. "Crazy Mama," "Fool to Cry," "Memory Motel," "Hey Negrita." I think the album is very underrated. "Cherry Oh Baby" sucks pretty hard, but the rest of the album jams. I used to play "Hot Stuff" on my funk radio show quite often. "Suck on the Jugular" and "Dance (pt. 1)" are pretty funky, too. It's a jungle out there.

They were pretentious while The Stones just went and did the dang thing..like rock n roll should be done.

For my money, the beauty of The Rolling Stones sound is their teetering on the verge of collapse vibe that separates them from many over produced R&R bands. Their lack of superlative players probably, to their advantage, contributes to this. (Not counting Mick Taylor)
While I wouldn't necessarily describe them as funky, many of their songs that I gravitate towards (early period of course) do have a certain groove. Along with Beast of Burdon i'd include as some of their grooviest... Stupid Girl - Aftermath Miss Amanda Jones - Between The Buttons 2000 Light Years from Home - Their Satanic Majesties Request Midnight Rambler, Monkey Man - Let It Bleed Bitch, Can't You Hear Me Knocking - Sticky Fingers Rocks Off, All Down The Line - Exile on Main St. And my favorite... Dancing With Mr. D. - Goats Head Soup Based on the image they cultivated over the years as rock's bad boys, I consider this their perfect theme song. Anyone care to explain this cover? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

And they've made some seriously funky records ... which The Beatles never did. The closest The Beatles came was Macca's "Coming Up". [Edited 2/22/05 23:27pm] Taxman is pretty funky. As is "Come Together" somewhat. There's also a couple I can't think of right now. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
