Love Maybe! "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

America just isn't ready for pop right now. Even if pop does come back in the US, I think it will take more than Emma to get it going. That being said, I was itnerested in getting the album and hope it does OK for her. Since someone decided to release it here, they obiviously have some high hopes for it. This is the first American release of a Spice Girl's CD sine Geri's debut.

Free Me is merely OK. The problem with its mellow 60's sound is that it isn't terribly exciting - she seems to be shooting for Petula Clark crossed with Goldfrapp, but it's very limp overall. The singles are the really standout bits here, with the only song that truly works outside the confines of the album being "Maybe", with its fantastic retro samba beat and swooning chorus. It is not the song or album that will crack the US market for her, though.
S Club 7 alum Rachel Stevens made a vastly superior pop record with Funky Dory, but I doubt that will be released in the US. The singles are brighter and more catchy, the album tracks sleek, refined and listenable (in one case better than any of the singles). Consistency is what Emma needs on her next LP.

Emma Bunton do well here in the USA? Not likely. I've not heard the song, but people are rarely afforded second chances in the music biz.

"sweet dreams my la x" or whatever it was called was a good song I guess. The video too . Remember s club 7? The modern day monkees I guess in a way.

I think I just can't get into the horrible early 90's samey-ness that plagued a lot of material from that era. I know you don't like them but I'm going to cite SAW as an example - every single damn thing they did was the same song, I swear! [Edited 2/21/05 14:55pm]

[Edited 2/21/05 14:55pm] My older sis' and cousins had loadsa cheesy US pop fork that era. I have noticed that almost all my stuff is USA made. Seriously Donny Osmond sounds far better then SAW. Of course it is rock hard to find this stuff now in the UK bargin bins as some of it never even charted. US pop seemed to embrace harder synths, drum programmes (though still not really newjack) whilst UK had all that euro club stuff at the time and of course SAW.

I Kylie and I still can't bring myself to listen to much of her pre-1994 (her move to Deconstruction) material. It's so dreadful. The only SAW song I ever liked was Donna Summer's "This Time I Know It's For Real" (in fact the Another Time In Place album is pretty good) - it takes a real singer like that to lift that material out of the depths. And Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up". That's about it. [Edited 2/21/05 15:11pm]

I like a lot of their work with Bananarama, especially Venus.

I own 1 kylie track. Which is off a obscure USA soundtrack called "if looks could kill". Track is "better the devil u know". Not a bad track actually. Verses are alright but it was just on the record. I had no intenion of buying soundtrack because of it..... How about Danni Minogue. She covered "the real thing" didn't she? Early 90's beach video? Funny remake.....
