"Billie Jean" and "Dirty Diana" are both groupie songs allegedly based on true stories, but two totally different types of groupies and a totally different sound.

There were no media-bashing or self-help/save-the-world songs on "Off The Wall" or "Thriller". "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is said to be about the media but it's not centered around himself like "Leave Me Alone".

And the "Bad" song and video has the same idea of gangs and anti-violence (though expressed far differently), but other than that I see no parallels.

eek

Is that an expression of disagreement? wink

Well, then I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree. IMO, since Thriller, MJ has been running around like a headless chicken trying to one-up himself. He tried to re-make Thriller (Bad), he tried to modernize his sound (Dangerous), he tried alternately yelling at his audience and asking them to pity him (HIStory), and then he just tried throwing doo-doo, whoops I mean feces at them (Invincible). Sadly, nothing worked and now look where his career is.

Anyway, Great pate', but I gotta motor if I wanna be on time for that party...

Ok, I'll bite. wave I don't like Michael Jackson. I don't like "Billie Jean," "Thriller," "Don't Stop," or any of them.

The only Michael Jackson songs that I can tolerate are "Blood on the Dancefloor" and "Smooth Criminal." In the right frame of mind, I can listen to "Dirty Diana."

I don't know why there are so many peaple who think that Bad is another Trhiller... eek

There are more similarities between Off the wall and Thriller ....
In Bad,MJ tries to be a bad guy... this is another concept.... He doesn't look the same, he wants to be a macho man that he is not...

The reviews on Bad was hard because the expectations were very high after the success of Thriller...

See, here's where I disagree. I think that part of the reason MJ albums used to sell so well was because they were released so far apart from one another. The man would pull 7, 8, 9 singles from an album over a three year period. He'd promote the hell out of that album and allow the hype to build up. If he'd released albums at Prince's pace, or at Madonna's, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to promote the hell out of Thriller, Bad, or Dangerous. He would've been on to the next project, and that would be the album that was moving the copies in stores.

Agreed. And considering that his albums recycle so much of his material, style and persona, people would become bored VERY quickly.

Are you sure ??

Off the wall wich was a huge success (the best selling album of 1979) was released between the Destiny album (1978) and the Triumph album (1980) album...
Thriller was released 2 years after the Triumph album and Victoy was released less than 2 years after Thriller...

Destiny > 1978
Off the Wall > 1979
Triumph > 1980
Trimph Live > 1981
Thriller > 1982
Victory > 1984

Only then, every MJ's albums were released every 4 years, even more.... Maybe to make more surgeries...

Other than MJ's solo albums, how many of those albums spawned a huge hit single? How many of those albums were promoted ad nauseum a'la every MJ album since Thriller? How many of those albums (other than the MJ's) had 7+ singles pulled from it?

The general public didn't buy Jacksons albums in the same manner that they bought MJ records. Besides, Mike is on Victory for all of 4 or 5 songs.

Are you sure? 'The Wall' came out in 1979. The last I'd checked, it's sold almost as much in America than OTW sold worldwide. Besides, Off The Wall wasn't even a #1 album on what became the Billboard 200.

Have you ever noticed that Michael as a solo artist has always had more success ???

Michael Jackson as a solo artist has always sold more albums even with the same promotion....

Yeah, you"re right, of course The wall sold more albums but this album was released in December 1979... And was number 1 during the year 1980....

Off the wall was released in August 1979... wink

It sounds nothing like its predecessors and the song topics (if you don't hastily generalize) are nowhere to be found on "Off The Wall" or "Thriller", either, so I don't see where you're coming from.

Bad was explicitly produced to sound like a sequel to Thriller. If you can't hear it, that's not my fault. Sit down with Quincy and have a talk with him about how the album was conceived.

Most everyone I know who owns both albums thinks Bad is just a Thriller rehash.

I do kinda like Bad, but it's obviously Thriller: Part 2

I don't consider myself an MJ fan, but there are a pretty fair chunk of his songs I do like. Of course, there's a lot of crap to wade through in his catalogue to find the gold.

I think the only albums of him that sound alike were Off The Wall and Thriller.

Bad's similarity with Thriller was that they were promoted the same way. A ballad duet as the first single with no video (Just Cant Stop Loving You, Girl Is Mine) followed by dance tracks with flashy videos

Other than that all his albums sounds different.

As for going downhill after Q, bullshit. My favorite mj albums were released in 90s. They are growers. They are not as catchy as his 80s material. It takes some time to appriciate them.

[/quote]Fuuny enough, I used to have that opinion of David Bowie. I loved the guy - a total superstar, but couldn't get into any of his songs (could just about stand Changes, Rebel Rebel and a few others but never really wanted to listen to them). Then when Earthling was released I loved the album, but still couldn't get into anything older.

Now I'm nearly 30 I suddenly find myself appreciating him more! I love Hunky Dory and lots of the other earlier stuff.

I suppose the one band I still can't understand the attraction of at all is Manic Sreet Preachers. Oh, and Morrisey. There's probably some more too...

Anyway back to the topic - no I don't know of anyone who wouldn't like at least one or two MJ songs.

Thank you. YOu guys are the only one, who actually answered my question. biggrin

I also used to feel this way about Prince. I just couldn´t get into his music. The first track that got to me was DIamond´s and pearls. The earlier stuff was just hard for me to get into. But nowadays I love him of course. It took me years to get into him, but I am glad I finally did. biggrin

Off The Wall is still his best. Thriller is good, Bad was just more of the same and therefore generally boring, Dangerous is listenable. HIStory disc two has about three tracks I like. Invincible was a complete disaster.

Michael has gotten increasingly self-indulgent and boring with age. It's not about the music, any more, and I suppose that's just as well, what with tracks like "2000 Watts" escaping the vaults and wreaking havoc on unsuspecting innocents.

I agree with that bit. smile

The first time I remember MJ was when I was about 4 years old and saw the "Bad" video. I think I came in at the worst possible time of his career because I've never really been impressed by anything's he's done, with the exception of "Remember the Time" - and that was more for the dancing in the video than the song itself. And "Scream" was all right. But I absolutely hated "Leave Me Alone," the "Free Willy" song (UGH!) and "Black & White." I own "Thriller," but I can only listen to "P.Y.T." and "Billie Jean" with any regularity. I really think his best material came before "Thriller," to be honest. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is the shit. Other than that, I fail to see what the hype was all about. Kind of like now with Justin Timberlake and Usher, I suppose.

I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION FOR Y´ALL!

Do you think that if MJ´s image was not as controversial, and people could just listen to his music without knowing who it is, that the reactions would be different?

I am asking this cause for example my granddad who´s not in favour of MJ the man, keeps telling me that MJ´s music SUCKS, yet he hardly ever heard any of it, but once I got to play Earth song for him (he can´t recognise Mj by voice - tells you how much he must know about his music) and I didn´t tell him who it was on purpose. I wanted to hear his opinion without being influenced by knowing who it is. When it finished, he said: "IT WAS BEAUTIFUL! Who was it?" When he found out it was MJ, BEAUTIFUL all of sudden became OK!
I sure do know a lot of people like that.

Of course image has plenty to do with the success of music, since the day elvis took the stage.
But if you listen to his latest music you see the lack of care in it as there used to be.
MJ seems to channel his love on other things besdies music. Whether its youth, children and Neverland, it doesn't seem to be the same for his music.
The sad thing is that a lot of his recent songs are focused on these things, and people don't want to hear songs about the lost children, healing the world through children. and how he's the best and nobody can touch him.

They want to hear about groupies, girls, sex, which are what MJ used to focus his music on. That's the MJ everyone loved and we don't seem to see that anymore.

I love 'Off The Wall' and 'Thriller',but I think that Michael has become lazy in recent years. He doesn't even bother writing most of his own lyrics anymore,he just hires the hottest R&B producers to do it for him. He's afraid to take chances and experiment.

I don´t think it´s lazyness.I think that he´s probably just tired of showbusiness. Well after 40 years of showbusiness, it´s no wonder. But I still do believe that he hasn´t stopped making music. When he says that music is his life, I believe him. He´ s just probably only keeping it in vaults. Have you seen his mexican deposition, where they asked him about tons of songs that were never released? I think he´s still like that, writing - but just not releasing it. Maybe he feels that now having kids, he doesn´t have time to bring them to a perfection that he´s obsessed with.

MJ seems to channel his love on other things besdies music.

I think that this is true and the way I see it is that it were his own kids that made him focus on other things in life, which I think ís a good thing for him.

Of course I miss him and his music and would love to hear more from him, but at the same time I realize how much he´s already done in his life and that he deserves to have a break and do whatever he feels like doing with his life. Actually when you think about it, this is the first time in his life that he´s taking some time off. We shouldn´t call him lazy. I think he´s done more in his life so far than most of us will ever do in our entire life-time.

Well let's look at it this way. What MJ has accomplished with 1 or 2 albums alone, is more than what others accomplish in their entire career.
Whether MJ has another hit album or not is irrelevant to the fact he alone has changed the face of pop music and music video for eternity.

In recent years he has really tuned me out i admit, but i can never deny his lasting legacy and neither can anyone else whether you like his music or not.

I feel the same way. I find it weird to see BET doing a MJ video marathon right now with all that's happening but that's another story.

I love Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad and I like Dangerous a lot but from History on to Invicible, it's been all downhill. He needs to have 1 producer for his next album and then I do believe that he could make a huge comeback, but he has to stop chasing trends.

I don´t know, but what has his music to do with the allegations? We should learn to separate the two. I know it´s hard, but who cares what was Mozart like or any other of those geniuses like? If we can do it with others, why not with MJ?
