I can only take the Grammy's in small doses so I don't know how many times Kanye came to the stage. I heard him begin a speech about his accident and wired jaw and I couldn't takes no more!

I mean, really; does Tina begin an exceptance speech with her triumph over Ike's ass whippings? Does Stevie begin one with his blindness? Does any band accept an award without first talking about their battles with drug addiction?

Guess, I'm just being crotchety, but you'd think Kanye was the first person ever to battle back from adversity.

I think he gave those long dramatic pauses because he didn't know what the hell to say.
And his last statement "People asked me what would I do if I didn't win - I GUESS WE'LL NEVER KNOW."

I agree. He defintely needs some humbling. Like so many hip/hop artists, his ego is so big he thinks there's no one better than he is. I don't dislike his music, but I'm glad he didn't win anymore than what he did.

Who Cares?

I’m from Chicago and a former member of Chicago's "underground hip hop scene", do you know how hard it is to make it out of Chi as a entertainer let alone a rapper? New York has been Ego trippin for YEARS!, I have seen hip hop grow in Chicago. From the very beginning Chi-town got no love. We were largely look over as being the city of "house" music, no thanks to Cool Rock Steady, meanwhile there were dope MC's like Twista that started out with the underground hip hop group "No Pity" that were dissed on the West Coast and then he got insulted on a record again by has been rapper Trech from Naughty by Nature right before Twista was soon dropped from his label in "91" Common, the most successful rapper from Chicago has only ONE gold album thus far, and he is a highly skilled Emcee.

Chicago has tons of dope Emcee's that never get any recognition because Chicago was look at as the consumers market. In comes Kanye West who achieved his status by producing some of the best tracks Jay Z ever flowed to (Guess Who's Back Take Over etc..) I have heard people on here clown West because he samples. Well you have to have a ear to sample, it's how you flip it that makes it unique. He doesn't sample the way P Diddy does and remakes the whole song, he seems to have a way of putting a soulful spin to things ( Jesus Walks) as opposed to the under produced club tracks you mostly hear today ( Ushers Yeah!). Further more Kanye West seems to be the bridge between what is considered "Hip Hop" (Common, Talib Qweli and Mos Def, and commercial rap like Jay Z and Free Way. And to top it off he chose not to front in his lyrics like he is some Mob Related crime figure, like Common who also chose to keep it real and be themselves on their records, as opposed to damn near every other rapper you see trying to gain "street credibility" that's what you call being successful on your own terms.

So I may be a bit bias in saying Fuck You, I’m proud of my Chicago fam, show your ass on the Grammys, act a fucking fool, say what you want to on that damn stage, it took Chicago years to get on the map. So I don't care how he accepts an award, it's about time.

Be proud Dude. It's your prerogative, but it's also mine to not care for the behaviour of some artists when they accept their awards. There is nothing wrong with any of them being proud, but when they get up there and act like they damn well deserve it, that's a huge turn off for me. I'm very happy they didn't give him album of the year. It went to exactly who deserved it, dead or not!

Do you happen to remember that record? I have all of Naughty's earlier albums; was it on one of them? I don't recall a diss of Twista -- I'd just like to hear it.

I lived in Chicago from the late 80's thru the mid 90's, and I always thought it was sad that (Tung) Twista didn't get more respect and acclaim.

I agree that it's about time Chi-town got some love, but I still thought Kanye's speech was way over the top. lol

I understand where youre comming from. There is a similar story in Detroit hip hop. There are so many amazing hip hop artists in Detroit that its bursting at the seams. You cant go to the mall or to a club without kids selling you their self-produced cds. The thing is Detroit hip hop artists and artists in general seem to burst through more often than Chicago artists. You can attribute that to artists that dont forget where they came from. Just like Common helping Kanye and Kanye helping others. I see Chicago gaining more respect in hip hop due to Kanye reaching out to other hip hop artits. As for his recent behavior, I think its inappropriate. Whatever happened to being humble and paying dues? Slum Village has been around for over 15 years and they have never won a Grammy and you dont see them acting a fool. He should be a bit more humble.

Personally, I think a speech on being the only non-white woman to win a best actress Oscar after 74 years of the awards deserves more time and reflection than a typical rapper who just wants to boast without a hint of humility. Halle's speech was more about honoring the black women who paved the way for her. Kanye exudes me me me me me more than a vocal warmup.

Talented writer/producer, great album, decent performance (if a bit overblown)....but, yeah, worst acceptance speech ever. His ego is definitely gonna kill his chances of longevity. He's making P. Diddy seem like Mother Freaking Theresa.

Well, if he was representing Chicago, he made Chicago look bad -- and somebody better tell him so. I'd be upset if someone who acted like that thought he was representing my hometown! We don't "walk" that way.
