why won't they eat!

February 16, 2005

From millionaire teen MARY-KATE OLSEN entering a Utah facility to battle anorexia to "The Simple Life" star NICOLE RICHIE's estimated less than a hundred-pound tiny figure, Hollywood starlets are flaunting their featherweight frames. The upcoming issue of Us Weekly, on newsstands this Friday, examines the weight of some of Tinseltown's tiniest stars.

It's been less than a year since Mary-Kate entered the $30,000 a month Cirque Lodge and, according to the glossy mag, the actress/entrepreneur gained a healthy 10 pounds after her stay, bringing her to an approximate 90 pounds -- a healthy size for the 5'1" star.

Her publicist MICHAEL PAGNOTTA tells Us, "Mary-Kate is doing fine. She's attending classes, has taken full control of her business along with ASHLEY and is trying to have a normal social life." A friend also tells the magazine that Mary-Kate is still in therapy and sees an eating coach every week.

A number of other entertainers have come to the defense of their weight. "I've always been skinny," the 5'2" Nicole said after stepping on the scale at the "HOWARD STERN Show" in February. After revealing her weight of 97 pounds, she said: "I gain[ed] weight in rehab -- it's not like it's a sudden weight loss!"

Former "Sex and the City" actress SARAH JESSICA PARKER is also in the mere double digits. The 5'4" talent, who's estimated at 98 pounds, told one publication, "I'm just someone who doesn't gain weight," she said. "I really do not do anything special, honest!"

Some of the smaller set even claim they'd like to gain some lbs! "I'm naturally small," the 5'7" KATE BOSWORTH says of her estimated 115-pound frame. "I feel like I have a back with a crack. I'm trying to get a little more [of a butt]."

The 108-pound talk show host KELLY RIPA even claims she's not as light as people think. "I'm solid," she said on a recent appearance on "Late Night with DAVID LETTERMAN." "I look small, but I'm deceptively heavy."

Another star mentioned in the telling article is 'In Good Company' actress SELMA BLAIR, who weighs in at an estimated 103 at 5'3". "I've never been anything but a flat-chested little girl," the 32-year-old actress has once said. "I'm very active, so I don't get on the scale."

And 5'3" BRITTANY MURPHY says she's happy with her stick figure. "An eating disorder is not a part of my life, nor has it ever been," the estimated 114-pound actress said once. "I am proud of being OLIVE OYL, so let it be!"

But striving to be the skinniest in Hollywood can take a toll, proven all too well just this week when the OscarĀ® winning JANE FONDA made the shocking announcement that she had suffered from bulimia for 35 years.

While giving her keynote speech for Montana State University's Girls for a Change Conference on Saturday, the 67-year-old actress told the audience that her struggle to look perfect has been difficult for her. "I mistook the physical hunger for spiritual hunger," she said.

I saw this woman on the street in NYC and she was like bones with a bit of skin stretched over them, and it was a shame because she had a beautiful face. i don't understand who thinks the skeleton look is attractive.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions about these ladies' eating habits. It's true that, because of their their celebrity status, they're more likely than members of the general population to have an eating disorder, but skin and bones don't necessarily indicate a disorder.

Take myself, for example. I'm four feet, eleven inches tall. Last time I had a physical I weighed 91 pounds. I've received rude looks in dressing rooms and changing rooms from normal-sized women, and I've had complete strangers come up to me and ask if I'm anorexic. I've never once in my life even thought about dieting, never mind starving myself. I am the size I am because of a combination of genetics, gastric reflux disorder and a painfully fast metabolism. If I don't eat full-fat, full-protein, full-carb everything, I actually start to lose weight.

It also really does bother me when women that I do know tell me they wish they "had my problem" if I complain about having to shop in pre-teen and childrens' departments in stores. Like it's fun having to sift throught outfits designed for 10 year olds, looking for something that doesn't completely suck. rolleyes

Why won't they eat? It's simple - society and the media tell us that women must be thin to be attractive/sexy. Also, like someone else above said, they get media attention and they love it. It infuriates me when I hear people say Beyonce is fat or Janet is chubby. Neither of these women need to lost weight. Queen Latifah may be overweight, but I don't think she looks bad. I think she looks pleasantly plump and that's ok. It's one thing to be obese. It can lead to many health problems, but one doesn't have to weigh 90 pounds with ugly breast implants to be attractive or accepted or thought of as beautiful. Does one??

Absolutely and if you were in Mark Kate and Ashley's shoes, it would be worse.
That kind of attitude regarding the perfect way to look is thrown at Hollywood stars the minute they walk in the door.

However these girls being very young don't really understand the ins and outs of health anyways.
It seems like her time in rehab taught her absolutely nothing rolleyes oh well, im afraid we may have another Caren Carpenter on our hands

Unfortunately, you are probably correct. These women don't even think about what this is doing to their bodies, specifically their heart and reproductive system. They have no idea the harm they could be doing. Look at Courtney Cox for example. She was excruciatingly thin during Friends and she had a lot of trouble getting pregnant. Now I don't know the woman personnaly, but I wonder if her problems stemmed from her lack of eating for so long. Another one is Brittany Murphy. God, that girl looks sickly!

As much as I'd like to blame the media for things like this, it goes far beyond that. I'd be a fool to say pressure in the industry has nothing to do with it, but it has more to do with one's own self-worth and control (or lack thereof). For many people struggling with self-worth and body image it's about the ability to feel in control over one thing in your life when the rest of your life is out of control. I'm not going to get into it too much, but I'm neither female nor rich and famous (drat!) and I've struggled with body image and eating disorders for many years. It happens to different people for different reasons.

You make a good point and I do agree with what you said. However, if the media wasn't constantly shoving it down your throat about how sexy and beautiful being thin is, perhaps you and others would have a better body image and higher self-worth. I hope you don't struggle with eating disorders anymore. I know this sounds corny, but you gotta love yourself because if you don't, who will? Take care.

MK and Ashley already look like preteens as it is. Now MK looks like she's 10 years old, like a little girl playing dress up in her mom's clothes. It's not even cute. I can only imagine a pedophile being attracted to that.

I'm doing alright now, thanks. smile And I don't disagree that "standards of beauty" and all that that entails plays a part in it. I think it's more of a catalyst for a problem that is already there. And it's a problem that people with severe control issues are going to need more than a few week stay in a facility to correct. In the same way that celebrity isn't really the problem, weight gain alone is not the solution. It's deeper seeded than that. But I agree with what you've said.

you would be suprised how many people love the skeleton look. most women are dying to be thin. there's a lot of pressure to have a great body but can you imagine what it must be like in hollywood?

Nicole Ritchie was a little bit chubby ,now she is so thin ,it is obvious she is starving herself ,some critics must have commented on her weight and Paris is so thin ,so she must have been compared to her,it is sad they are put under so much pressure to look a certain way ,but they take it too far and end up looking sick sigh

The media, the fashion industry, etc. does push the "thin is in!" ideal, but personally, I think it's up to the individual to learn to see past the bullshit and realize they can be happy with how the Creator made them.
