I have that on tape. Another one was with Ernie on Arsenio. He played "High Wire" and "Rising From The Ashes". Arsenio's band backed him up. He blew it up! Ernie always shows what time it is. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

What's the deal with Ernie's left hand/right hand thing? he seems to be able to play equally well either way... I think he once said that it's almost like an alter ego thing...Have you heard of anyone else being able to do this? Ernie's the only one I've ever seen do this. There may be others, but I've only seen Ernie do it. It kinda reminds me of te fencing scene in "The Princess Bride" when Inigo Montoya is fencing Wesley and he says "There is something I have to tell you - I am not left handed!"
The real question is: Is Ernie a lefty that plays right handed or a righty that plays left handed? I think he's the latter, but I am not sure. I tried that after going to that Highwire concert back in the day. It gave me a brainache, so I stopped. Ernie's a bad mutha...shut yo mouth! [Edited 3/8/05 13:06pm] | |

Only other person that I know of was Hendrix. I read in an article in Guitar Player from 81 I think where Ernie talks about having the desire to learn how to play left handed because of Jimi. That was his motivation. I admire Ernie, cuz re-learning how to play with an unnatural hand is deep. Your mind knows what to do, but that hand is so used to picking, sweeping, plucking, and vise versa..to re-train that is something else. And to play WELL. When I saw Ernie live at The Roxy, he pulled out that shit where he switched hands and pali, he played AS WELL as he did right-handed. It wasn't a natural thing to switch like it was for Hendrix. That's what I admire about Ernie. He dedicated himself to doing that and did it. I was blown away cuz I know that shit isn't easy. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Although I consider Ladyland a much more harmonically complex and interesting composition than Atlantis, I get the point you're making about the imagery.
A funny Voyage to Atlantis story or an example of "Stupid Band Tricks". The band I was in at the time decided that everyone in the group that could carry a tune should be featured as lead vocalist on at least one tune. After much cajoling our *bass player agreed to do Voyage. Since we knew he hated singing this piece, we arranged an a cappella vocal breakdown toward the end of the tune where he would sing the Atlantis/I'll Always parts and we would harmonize the It's back to you/Come back to you parts. The fun part of this was during his parts the rest of the band would be whispering things to him off mike that we knew would make him start laughing. We were successful about 75% of the time. We'd only pull this prank on him during gigs in town where most of the audience knew what we were doing. *(Through an unlikely set of events he met and became friends with Jonathan Demme who has given him crew and bit parts in quite a few of his movies. Among them are The Manchurian Candidate, Beloved, Philadelphia, Married to the Mob and Something Wild. In Philadelphia, he was the guy in the wheel chair that told the lawyer joke to Denzel Washington in the elevator.) tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
