Ernie's playing always amazes me. Jesse's playing reminds me of Ernie sometimes.
If you haven't heard "Ballad of the Fallen Soldier", you're missing one of Ernie's greater solos.

I love The Isley Brothers song, "Voyage To Atlantis". I haven't heard Jimi's "Electric Ladyland" album. I only have a greatest hits type CD called "The Ultimate Experience". I like some of the cuts on it so I will eventually get around to checking out some of Jimi's albums.

Since I have my fellow guitar lovers up here, can anyone tell me where the heck is Eric Gales? That's another bad-ass on the axe.

"Ballad of the Fallen Soldier" has some smokin' guitar on it! Ernie gets some guitar time on that new Patti Labelle/Ron Isley song.

Yep, yep, brother! Eric is no joke.

Ernie also played drums on The Isleys recordings.

Back then you didn't loop a bar of drums for 132 measures you had to play the same groove for six or seven minutes.

Maybe this can spin off into a Isleys Mix Tape/CD thread.

The Isleys are underrated as songwriters. Aside from the hits they all kind of good songs. From Harvest For The World to Let Me Down Easy.

Before Luther The Isleys would cover a song and their version would sound better. I won't mention any names but open the window and the jasmines in your mind will be blown.

It would have been great if Jimi would have been around to jam with The Isleys in the 70's.

And see, I think "Are You Experienced?" is his Sgt Pepper. Probably cuz it's my Fave Hendrix album. Side note: Are You Experienced? and Sgt Pepper were recorded around the same time, both in England. Can u imagine the magic that surrounded England at those moments? That's very, very deep, if u think about it. The force of just sheer creativity coming down from the heavens for the sheer purpose of blowing minds and sparking desire and will in countless others to do the same. That's deep to me.

Ah man, I've been looking so hard for a legit Isley compilation with Testify Pt's 1 and 2 but I can't seem to anywhere mad

For Jimi I agree Have you Ever Been does show off his voice. If we're talking voice though I gotta say the song that really made me appreciate it was the 'acoustic' version of Angel (found on various bootlegs, including the 'Best of the Bootlegs' cd) because it comes across as natural kinda off the cuff...that rendition is simply ethereal sweetness, just him with a some chorus effect on his guitar I think. It actually made me appreciate the original (as a song composition) more because I never used to dig it that much before.

Why silly me, I thought this thread was asking me had I ever been to "Electric Ladyland". The answer is yes, many years ago. A fellow guitarist and friend and I went to NY and visited the recording studio "Electric Ladyland", it is one of our fondest memories.
But as for the two recordings comparison, there was a time I went through the Ernie Isley stage (because he was the only smoking guitarist being played on R&B radio at the time). But Ernie is in no way close to being compared to Hendrix. He's a great black guitarist don't get me wrong, but there is a ton of guitarist between Hendrix and Ernie. Maybe I feel this way because right after Ernie decided to go solo and put out a solo album, I went to see him at a place in philly called "Ripley's". Ernie's performance sucked big time! He didn't sound anywhere his recordings, it was as if he lost his chops! Ernie can play only when he's in the studio where he can overdub 'til he gets it right.

Man, that's a stone trip that u mentioned that. A couple of months ago, I was in New York. This is my third time having to go to N.Y., but it was my first time really having a chance to go to Electric Lady Studios. It is cool, isn't it? Very powerful. U can totally "feel" Jimi's presence there. And well u should. It's his house. Now, on the subject of Ernie. Man, I respect your thoughts, but I gotta disagree withca on Ernie live. I also saw Ernie on his "High Wire" tour at The Roxy in Hollywood. Man! I thought Ernie played out of this world! He sounded very good. Better than the recordings. He played all of High Wire material and of course all of The Isley hits. He played left hand on a couple of songs. That really fucked me up. Perhaps u saw him on an off night or I saw him on a good night. That shit happens as u and I both know.

I remember seeing Ernie Isley perform on the old David Letterman show (on NBC). He did "Back to Square One", live, no overdubs with Paul and the band. He tore it up!!! Played behind his head 'n everything - it was definitely a searing shot of guitar heat in that cool-ass studio.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. And, yes, this forum is a great way to find new music. I've come across many new (to me) songs/performers since I started coming here. And I'm impressed this thread has maintained for so long - over two weeks! Usually it'd get buried under a few hundred Madonna threads.
