when was the last great double album?

They just don't make 'em like they used to do they? I say this as I listen to Tusk which I only got a couple of days ago.

Mellon Colie and the Infinite Sadness (Smashing Pumpkins) is the last one I can think of and that was about a decade ago. I wouldn't even call it great but it was pretty good. Prior to that I'd say Sign O' the Times, a further decade back, then 1999.

In the 60s and 70s there was Blonde on Blonde (Dylan), White Album (Beatles), Electric Ladyland (Hendrix), Exile On Main St. (Rolling Stones) Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin), Songs In the Key of a Life (Wonder), Tusk (Fleetwood Mac) and Saturday Night Fever (does that count?). All brilliant double albums. Bad Girls (Donna Summer) was quite good as well.

Is there even any artist around these days that would be capable of making a great double album? I think Prince may have it in him but can't think of any others.

Prince already made his entry in the list of great double albums, I don't think he needs, or is inclined, to do so again. As far as other modern day artists who have or could. Well Speakerboxxx/Love Below was pretty damn good as far as I'm concerned, maybe not on quite the same level as the others you mentioned but the closest thing we've seen in hip-hop (correct me if I'm wrong).

Hmmm... I love The Love Below but that was really an Andre 3000 (or is it 2000?) solo effort. Speakerboxx is mostly Big Boi and does absolutely nothing for me. They should've released them seperately.

I found Big Boi's half of that album to be shockingly weak compared to Andre's. His singles did nothing for me either.

nowadays, its common for CD releases to be long enough to be considered a "double album" by previous standards.

SOTT can fit on one disc. So can most old-style double albums.

Yes, but there is always concept behind the double album. True, disks these days can hold about as much as the true double album from back when. Hell, most vinyl you get nowadays is a double vinyl for new music. But the true form of the double album is a bit lost these days. Mellon Collie probably could be 3 vinyl set...and Outkast is easily 4.

I think the musicians that can do it today...Beck & Bjork...Ani DiFranco.

Nellie McKay's "Get Away From Me" which came out last year fits the bill for me. It was her debut album, even.

Before that, Bruce Hornsby's "Spirit Trail" which came out in '98 or something like that. Check it out!

Also, 2pac's "All Eyez on Me" was a good album (I don't know about "great").

If you still shop for new vinyl like i do, everything's a double album now.

yeah, true 2-CD releases of new material - like the Outkast album, and NIN's The Fragile - would have to be like 4 record sets back in the old days.

the double album is a lost art form in the new era

I always thought of a normal album as the perfect timespan for am artist to fill. Only really talented artists would get away with a double album.

The last one I actually bought was Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me by The Cure, if I remember correctly, after that everybody started using the cd timespan, mostly to fill it with left over fodder.

My one pet peeve about that album is that it's not the full album because it couldn't all fit on one CD.

Right? The only way you got it all was on Cassette (did vinyl have Hey you?..goshies..I haven't heard that song in a long time (I have the CD)) It'll be interesting to see how it gets reissued.

Yes, the vinyl edition did include "Hey You". The extended version was included on the "Hot Hot Hot!!!" 12". And it finally made it onto CD via the 'Join The Dots' box set.
