For people who think MJ can't get funky like Prince... Listen to Walk Right Now from the Triumph album.
I consider Triumph to be the forgotten Michael Jackson solo album. Except for a few co-writing credits and some background vocals, the other brothers may as well not be there. The songs are so funky! Walk Right Now is one of the funkiest tracks MJ has ever layed down. Lovely One and Heartbreak Hotel also deserve honoury mentions. I may get shot down for saying this, but IMO, Triumph is far superior to both Off The Wall and Thriller.

hehe, nope don't have a gun at hand but I agree it's a really superb album, I wouldn't rate it higher than Off the wall, not even Thriller... but I'm sure it hit's my player more often than most any other MJ/Jacksons album . To tell you the truth...
I think Michael should NEVER have returned to the Jacksons after 'Off The Wall'.That album turned him into the ultimate solo artist, and there was no need to go back. And he certainly should not have participated in that 'Victory' fiasco.

Come on... Walk Right Now, Lovely One and Heartbreak Hotel are, in my opinion only rivalled on Off The Wall by Don't Stop Till You Get Enough. Tracks like I Can't Help It and It's The Falling In Love make me wanna
Time Waits For No-one is far better than She's Out Of My Life IMO. And as for Thriller, okay, Triumph doesn't have the fleeting moments of genius like Billie Jean or Beat It... but I prefer Triumph just for the fact that it doesn't have Paul McCartney doing his frog impressions on it.

A world without the Victory album WOULD be a better place.... for our children, and our childrens children. But a world without the Triumph album? I think you need to listen to that record again!

I agree about Victory beeing a 'dead born' by design. but Triumph? come one... this one truly kicks ass! with a few adaptions it could have easily been marketed as a MJ solo album, and to some degree I actually see it this way Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. You gotta give it to the other brothers though... Wondering Who makes me feel like patting them on the head and giving them a C- for effort.
It's really quite amazing how useless they are. You don't actually realise how little talent they have until you hear a song like Wondering Who sitting alongside MJ-penned gems like Walk Right Now, Can You Feel It and Heartbreak Hotel.

You don't like I Can't Help It? sometimes. I like catchier tunes. I see why you like Invincible and Off The Wall. Ballads like Butterflies, Heaven Can Wait, Break Of Dawn, sounds like updated Off The Wall ballads. People who adore Off The Wall should give some chance to Invincible.

That's the problem though I love the ballads on Invincible, but there weren't enough dance tracks. Unbreakable, Heartbreaker, and Invincible all sounded too similar. You Rock My World will go down in MJ History. But where are the other great dance tracks?

It was just so poorly produced. That girl I can't take her Should have known she was a heartbreaker I love Unbreakable too great opener. Speechless and Whatever Happens are great hidden gems as well. such WRONG tracklist killed the album for me. Invincible was definately lacking on the up-tempo front.
YRMW is the only dance track on the album that actually sounds like an MJ track. The others fail to cut the mustard IMO. Some show promise (listen to the middle eight of Heartbreaker... "I never thought that I would stop caring about you..." - one of the rare goosebump moments of the album). I too love the ballads (minus the terrible Don't Walk Away). But I miss the anger of HIStory, the passion of OTW and Triumph and the overblown drama of Bad and Dangerous. Invincible is all a little too middle-of-the-road for my liking....

Which is why I went for 2000 Watts 'cos it bangs hard. As for Whatever Happens, I'll check it later to see which bit you're on about. . [Edited 2/14/05 5:20am]

"Triumph" is my absolute favorite album by either The Jacksons or Michael Jackson. I like it better than "Off The Wall" and far better than "Thriller". This album was much more funky with much less pop crossover appeal, which is what I like. Andy is a four letter word.

I love "walk right now", but Prince never did a disco track ever so it is hard to compare but I know what u mean. (I guess "i wanna be ur lover" is disco right?)
I prefer "triumph" over "off the wall" too. I love "can you feel it" "time waits for no one" "heartbreak hotel". I actually prefer "victory" over "triumph". Good to see his brothers do some work themselves. "one more chance" beats "time waits for no one" hands down. Plus "torture" is cool as is "wait" and the silly "body". "triumph" has them annoying disco horns. I like synths which is why I prefer "victory". "victory" always gets ragged on. As for "2300 jackson street", I love that album too. "nothin (that compares to you)" "maria" "she" They are great tracks. Especially "she". Remember the video to "nothin (that compares to you)"? Anyone heard randy and the gypsies? Sorta chukki Bookerish in production. Funky industrial sounding r'n'b. "love you honey" "i cant wait" and "gigolo" are awesome tracks. Particually "gigolo"....."iam a gigolo baby, let me giggle u down".....funky stuff.

Triumph ??
One of the most underrated albums of all times... I LOVE this album so far... Funky as hell.... This album prove that Mike can compose some very good stuff without Quincy... But Triumph only goes platinum plus... This album would deserve much more... really My fav is Everybody... Great funky track....

You'll do anything for family. My totally off-the-wall guess is that Katherine told MJ to help his brothers, which he did. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
