The New Romantics - and the Old?? Lots of Duranies here...
Any lovers of the New Romantics, in general? I'm looking at writing about them for an upcoming project - working on a masters right now. Might be comparing the new with the old - Byron, Keats, Shelley... Yes, the New Romantics started out as an aesthetic movement, a backlash against the punkish elements of the British club scene (Birmingham, more specifically), with Bowie nights and the like... But let's not forget that JTaylor & Rhodes were art school students! I love the dark romanticism of their early videos, first three albums or so. Isn't Prince a "new romantic" in his own right? Discuss...

Do you remember any of their videos - early 80s MTV stuff that truly fits the romantic aesthetic? I just thought of some of ABCs - like "shoot that poison arrow." Human League to me seemed merely new wave... maybe I'm wrong? I can't recall anything memorable about Spandau Ballet's videos, but the music was killer... Adam Ant's videos were the WORST! Cheap video stuff, laughable production values. But very amusing in their own way.

Human League falls squarely in the latter category though. Adam Ant did have some cheap vids, but he is the epitome of New Romantic. Hell, the guy stylised himself as a Rock & Roll Dandy. I think Prince definitely fits the New Romantic aesthetic, even though not all of his music does. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

As a kid, one of the radio stations I listened to was KROQ in Los Angeles. Adam Ant was a fave as well as Duran, Japan, Human League, ABC, etc. When Prince released "Controversy", his image was very "New Romantic". There is no doubt about that. And even his image with 1999, he was very influenced visually by Adam Ant. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him." http://ccoshea19.googlepa...ssanctuary http://ccoshea19.googlepages.com
