This can only serve to speed up the inevitable Egomania Pattern: poor sales for second or third album, followed by drug addiction, fall from grace, and homeless-Kanye-arrested-for-pissing-in-garbage-bins news factoids.

One can only hope.

BTW: I love how the word "Genius" has gone from The Beatles in the 60's, Prince in the 80's to Kanye West in the '00s. Instead of being a "genius" for re-writing modern music or being able to play multiple instruents, you're a genius nowadays for speeding up a couple of old Chaka Khan records. thumbs up!

Ok I like and have lots of respect for Kanye, but he is ONLY 1 ALBUM STRONG. That is not Genius nor is it incredible. He had a good solid album and his beats are crafted nicely. But GENIUS? rolleyes Over-exaggerating

Great album though, the best rap album of last year nod Or was that 2003? confuse

Cynickill, hyperbole be thy name.

I don't think any critic on this poll labelled him a genius, but by putting his album at number one out of all the albums released in 2004, they were pretty much saying as much.

Am I the only person that found The College Dropout boring? I had to listen to it at my job this summer and it just seemed so long to me. Plus, as stated before, he's only done 1 album. Maybe after he's done like 2 or 3 excellent albums then you can call him that but we just label too many people geniuses without letting these people develope their craft, and in some cases they don't deserve the title at all. It's no wonder why many people who get all this buzz early can never maintain or rise from what they did before. They believe their own press and Kanye's in danger of that if he don't get that ego in check.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Precisely. This is exactly what happened with Alicia Keyes. She released a mediocre debut album, and they give her 5 Grammys for it.Critics act as if she is the female Stevie Wonder.Instead of giving her time to grow, evolve and really develop into something wonderful, people are too quick to declare somebody a "genuis".It took Prince four or five albums before he won a Grammy, but these days,it only takes a few months.

Actually, I thought Alicia Keys' debut album was quite better than mediocre; in fact, I would say that it was comparable to the debut albums of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton. Having said that, I believe the talent level of Alicia Keys' peers during her debut was significantly lower than that of Whitney, Mariah and Toni Braxton, as they still had to compete in the musical marketplace with Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Metallica, and later Nirvana and Pearl Jam. If you look at who was huge musically when Alicia Keys first debuted (N'Sync, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Ashanti, Ja Rule, J.Lo, Limp Bizkit), Alicia Keys looks like the second coming of Aretha Franklin. So I can understand why the critics would exalt her so much when they had so few artists to choose from. It's almost comparable to what Eddie Murphy said in his standup act during the 80's when he said that a Big Mac tastes like five-star dining when you've been starving in the desert.

That's always been part of the Alicia Keys marketing strategy though: "Compared to so-n-so she's brilliant." So-n-so being Britney and Nsynce.

nod

The Grammy commitee seems to be more and more affected! The praise for Kayne West and his ruining of a great Chaka Khan song is at worst, absolutely uncalled for and absurd and at best, too early.
